Life is a constant journey of trying to open our eyes and God never promised us an easy path. But even in the most dark night, if we say "yes" to Him, all of heaven opens to pour out His Love and goodness.
May Lord Shiva bless our lives and watch us over our journeys. This most auspicious of nights, may He teach us in our spirit and give us the blessings of the Light.
From the "Shivastotravali" of Utpaladeva (translated by Constantina Bailly).
Carry me into your abode, O Lord -
I, who, through the touch of the guru
Have become attached
To the blissful touch
Of your blessed lotus feet.
The hair on my head glistens
With color from the dust of your lotus feet;
When shall I begin to dance
The dance of ever-impetuous delight?
O Lord! You are my only Lord!
I perpetually beseech
That I would sooner be made a mute
And dwell within you
Than become wise in any other way.
O Lord! Ocean of Nectar!
O Gleaming Three-eyed One!
O Sweet One even of the Monstrous Eyes!
Let me cry and dance
Exclaiming all this with joy.
With my eyes closed
At the touch of your lotus feet
May I rejoice,
Reeling with drunkenness
From the wine of your devotion.
May I live in that sanctuary, O Lord,
Where, taking many forms,
You reside with Devi
From the palace up to the city gates.
O Lord, may the rays
Of your brilliance beam steadily
Until the lotus of my heart opens
To worship you.
Grant, O Lord, That I fall at your feet always
And find such delight there
That even my mind becomes intoxicated
And dissolves in bliss.
Whether through immense joy or through anguish,
Whether from on a wall or in an earthen jug,
Whether from external objects or from within,
Reveal yourself to me, O Lord!
May the Lord of Love, who projects himself
into this universe of myriad forms,
From whom all beings come and to whom all
Return, grant us the grace of wisdom.
He is fire and the sun, and the moon
And the stars. He is the air and the sea,
And the Creator, Prajapati.
He is this boy, he is that girl, he is
This man, he is that woman, and he is
This old man, too, tottering on his staff.
His face is everywhere.
He is the blue bird, he is the green bird
With red eyes; he is the thundercloud,
And he is the seasons and the seas.
He has no beginning, he has no end.
He is the source from which the worlds evolve.
From his divine power comes forth all this
Magical show of name and form, of you
And me, which casts the spell of pain and pleasure.
Only when we pierce through this magic veil
Do we see the One who appears as many.
From the "Shivastotravali" of Utpaladeva. The Stotra One - "The Pleasure of Devotion".
We praise the one who is filled with devotion, Who meditates not nor recites by the rule, And yet without any effort at all Attains the splendor of Shiva. Even the path of worldly living Becomes blissful for the devotees Who have obtained your blessing, O Lord, And who live inside your realm. When everything in the world is in your form, How could there be a place Not suitable for devotees? Where in the world does their mantra Fail to bear fruit? Triumphant are they, intoxicated With the celestial drink of devotion. They are beyond duality Yet retain you as "the other." Only those who are immersed In the joy of fervent devotion Know the essence, O Lord, Of your boundless ocean of bliss. Lord! When the objective world has dissolved Through a state of deep meditation, You stand alone - And who does not see you then? But even in the state of differentiation Between the knower and the known, You are easily seen by the devotees. Just as Devi, Your most beloved, endless pool of bliss, Is inseparable from you, So may your devotion alone Be inseparable from me. The path of the senses is threefold, Marked by pleasure, pain, and delusion. For the devotee this is the path That leads to your attainment. How wonderful it is that the mind, O Lord, In essence the seed of all suffering, When doused with the nectar of devotion, Bears the magnificent fruit of beatitude.
Namamishamishana nirvanarupam vibhum vyapakam brahmavedasvarupam Nijam nirgunam nirvikalpam niriham chidakashamakashavasam bhajeaham
I salute your Ishana form bereft of everything,
Who blesses, who has spread everywhere,
Who the form of Brahaman is as described in Vedas,
Who is true, who is property less, and who is everywhere
Who does not have any differences,
And who is like a sky and resides in the divine cosmos, I pray him. || 1 | Nirakaramomkaramulam turiyam gira gyana gotitamisham girisham Karalam mahakala kalam kripalam gunagara sansaraparam natoaham
I salute that God who is without properties,
Who is the source of the holy sound Om,
Who is thureeya, who is beyond sound, wisdom and senses.
Who is the God of mountains, who is cruel,
Who is the death to God of death, who is merciful,
Who is beyond properties and the bridge to cross life.
The fourth and most holy state of human beings. || 2 || Tushharadri sankasha gauram gabhiram manobhuta kotiprabha shri shariram Sphuranmauli kallolini charu ganga lasadbhalabalendu kanthe bhujanga
I salute that God who is more whiter,
Than the Himalayas and the conch,
Who is majestic, whose shine,
Is superior to crores of god of love,
On whose head is the holy Ganges with waves,
Who wears the crescent on his forehead,
And a serpent encircles his neck. || 3 || Chalatkundalam bhru sunetram vishalam prasannananam nilakantham dayalam Mrigadhishacharmambaram mundamalam priyam samkaram sarvanatham bhajami

Who has broad clear eyes, whose face is happy,
Whose neck is blue, who is merciful,
Who wears the lion's skin and a garland of skulls,
Who is God of all, loving and the destroyer. || 4 || Prachandam prakrishhtam pragalbham paresham akhandam ajam bhanukotiprakasham Trayah shula nirmulanam shulapanim bhajeaham bhavanipatim bhavagamyam

Who is superior, capable and divine,
Who is limitless, who is not born,
Who has the luster of billions of Suns,
Who holds the trident, who completely destroys,
Who holds the spear, who is consort of Parvathi,
And who goes in to the state of divine. || 5 || Kalatita kalyana kalpantakari sada sajjananandadata purari Chidananda samdoha mohapahari prasida prasida prabho manmathari
Oh Lord you are beyond time and ages,
You are the blissful and one who destroys,
This world at the end of the eons,
You are the one who gives happiness to the good,
You are the destroyer of the three cities,
You are the Lord who grants us all,
Eternal bliss and destroy wrong passions,
And Oh killer of God of love, be pleased, be pleased. || 6 || Na yavath umanatha padaravindam bhajantiha loke pare va naranam Na tavath sukham shanti santapanasham prasida prabho sarvabhutadhivasam

So please bless me God who lives in all beings. || 7 || Na janami yogam japam naiva pujam natoaham sada sarvada shambhu tubhyam Jara janma duhkhaugha tatapyamanam prabho pahi apannamamisha shambho

I being surrounded by old age, birth and sorrows,
Oh Lord, please save me from these dangers. || 8 ||

He whom I enclose with my name is weeping in this dungeon.
I am ever busy
building this wall all around; and as this wall goes up into the sky day by
day I lose sight of my true being in its dark shadow.
I take pride in this great wall, and I plaster it with dust and sand lest a
least hole should be left in this name; and for all the care I take I lose
sight of my true being.
The Real gives this and He gives that,
so through Him take both this and that,
and when He gives some things to you,
hold not yourself back from it.
He who recognizes "this"
will be a great imam,
but no one who says "this"
can escape from saying "that".
Between the two appears what turns him from this and that.
Some believe in this,
some believe in that.
Just so you should know the truth of things - just so.
This is the First Chapter of the Ashtavakra Gita. This book embodies Ashtavakra's teaching to King Janaka which vouched him Self-Knowledge between the time he placed one foot upon the stirrup of his horse and lifted himself to place the other foot on the other stirrup. Chapter 17 is here.
Janaka said:
How is one to acquire knowledge? How is one to attain liberation? And how is one to reach dispassion? Tell me this, sir. 1.1
Ashtavakra said:
If you are seeking liberation, my son, avoid the objects of the senses like poison and cultivate tolerance, sincerity, compassion, contentment, and truthfulness as the antidote. 1.2
You do not consist of any of the elements — earth, water, fire, air, or even ether. To be liberated, know yourself as consisting of consciousness, the witness of these. 1.3
If only you will remain resting in consciousness, seeing yourself as distinct from the body, then even now you will become happy, peaceful and free from bonds. 1.4
You do not belong to the brahmin or any other caste, you are not at any stage, nor are you anything that the eye can see. You are unattached and formless, the witness of everything — so be happy. 1.5
Righteousness and unrighteousness, pleasure and pain are purely of the mind and are no concern of yours. You are neither the doer nor the reaper of the consequences, so you are always free. 1.6
You are the one witness of everything and are always completely free. The cause of your bondage is that you see the witness as something other than this. 1.7
Since you have been bitten by the black snake, the opinion about yourself that "I am the doer," drink the antidote of faith in the fact that "I am not the doer," and be happy. 1.8
Burn down the forest of ignorance with the fire of the understanding that "I am the one pure awareness," and be happy and free from distress. 1.9
That in which all this appears is imagined like the snake in a rope; that joy, supreme joy, and awareness is what you are, so be happy. 1.10
If one thinks of oneself as free, one is free, and if one thinks of oneself as bound, one is bound. Here this saying is true, "Thinking makes it so." 1.11
Your real nature is as the one perfect, free, and actionless consciousness, the all-pervading witness — unattached to anything, desireless and at peace. It is from illusion that you seem to be involved in samsara. 1.12
Meditate on yourself as motionless awareness, free from any dualism, giving up the mistaken idea that you are just a derivative consciousness or anything external or internal. 1.13
You have long been trapped in the snare of identification with the body. Sever it with the knife of knowledge that "I am awareness," and be happy, my son. 1.14
You are really unbound and actionless, self-illuminating and spotless already. The cause of your bondage is that you are still resorting to stilling the mind. 1.15
All of this is really filled by you and strung out in you, for what you consist of is pure awareness — so don't be small-minded. 1.16
You are unconditioned and changeless, formless and immovable, unfathomable awareness, unperturbable: so hold to nothing but consciousness. 1.17
Recognise that the apparent is unreal, while the unmanifest is abiding. Through this initiation into truth you will escape falling into unreality again. 1.18
Just as a mirror exists everywhere both within and apart from its reflected images, so the Supreme Lord exists everywhere within and apart from this body. 1.19
Just as one and the same all-pervading space exists within and without a jar, so the eternal, everlasting God exists in the totality of things. 1.20
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord,
“He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler's snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord,
“I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
