Knots

Knots as ancient symbol of eternity and love span both the East and West. There are quite a few variations, one of the more popular is the Celtic knot, which is often referred to as the endless knot. This knot is created from one continuous line symbolizing our connection with nature and all things. The knot is divided into four parts which represent the intertwining of the four seasons and the four elements with our lives.
Shrivatsa or "Endless Knot" is a symbol for eternity, compassion, wisdom and harmony. It is one of the eight auspicious symbols in Tibetan Buddhism, representing the interconnection of all beings, without beginning or ending. The intertwining of the lines also represents how all events, all phenomena are conjoined together as a closed cycle of cause and effect.  It indicates continuity as the underlying reality of existence. It is conjectured that it may have evolved from an ancient Naga symbol with two snakes.
It signifies the dramatic interplay and interaction of the opposing forces in the dualistic world of manifestation, leading to their union. Despite the opposing representation, it also represents the ultimate union and harmony of the opposing forces in the universe.
The expression "tying the knot" is thought to be where the couple had their hands bound in an endless knot as part of the wedding ritual.  In India the marriage itself is a divine knot. Once the two individuals are into marital knot, their individual karmas are intertwined. Physically it is expressed in  gathabandhan ritual where the knot is tied between the scarves of the bride and groom.
During Hindu wedding the groom secures the mangalasutra (the symbol of marriage union) by tying three knots. Each knot symbolizes each aspect of the body: Sthula Sharira (gross or physical body), Sukshma Sharira (subtle or pranic body), Karana Sharira (causal body). It also stands for the three aspects of commitment: manasa, vachaa, karmana - believing it, saying it and executing it.

But other knots exist which it is necessary to dissolve. There is an interesting Christian icon.  It refer to Saint Irenaeus's words who made a comparison between Eve and Mary, saying:"Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it".
Johann  Schmittdner "Mary Undoer of Knots"
What are these knots? It's not only karmic blocs from past life. After all, we cannot know it. But there are the problems and struggles we face today. The puzzle for which we do not see any solution, the knots of discord, disrespect, violence, the absence of peace and joy. There are also the knots of anguish and despair of sick or separated, the knots of alcoholism, depression, unemployment, fear, solitude…These knots do not connect but divide us each from other, from Love. How they suffocate the soul, beat us down and betray the heart’s joy and separate us from God. We should be stronger to overcome it. Then, free from our knots, we can be a testimony of the Divine Power in this world, and we can help those who cry without any consolation, those who are lonely or tied with knots.

Up from Earth's Center through the Seventh Gate
I rose, and on the Throne of Saturn sate,
And many Knots unraveled by the Road;
But not the Master-Knot of Human Fate.

My Peace is in my Aloneness

"One" by samirmalik

Brothers, my peace is in my aloneness.
My Beloved is alone with me there, always.
I have found nothing in all the worlds
That could match His love,
This love that harrows the sands of my desert.
If I come to die of desire
And my Beloved is still not satisfied,
I would live in eternal despair.

To abandon all that He has fashioned
And hold in the palm of my hand
Certain proof that He loves me -
That is the name and the goal of my search.

--- Rabi´a al-Adawiyya, a female Muslim saint and Sufi mystic. Translation by Andrew Harvey and Eryk Hanut.

The Point of the Circle

One of the most famous symbol, common to East and West, is the Center and the Circle. The circle, because it has no beginning or end, is symbolic of eternity. The Center stands for the One, immobile in the midst of everything. From this Supreme Point, Source of all Creations, emanate rays in all direction. The circle represents the Many, or all the phenomena ever changing outside. Like an image of a wheel, the circumference represent the manifestation produced by all the spokes emanating from the center.  The Point within the Circle was hailed among all the nations as the Beginning and the End, the Cause and Effect, the Principle of Life and Action which pervades, animates and governs the universe.
As you look at the hindu yantra, allow your eyes to focus on its center. This dot in the center is called the Bindu, which represents the unity that underlies all the diversity of the physical world. Bindu is the sparkling, infinitesimal dot, the spark, the blue pearl from which worlds, unfurl and into which they curl back. And from bindu, says Hindu religious thought, came energy and time and space, perhaps the first light followed by the first sound.  According to Vedantic texts, there was none before the creation except Brahman, the pure Being, the non-manifested, the undifferentiated Maha Bindu, the Supreme Point, the Conscience-Energy-Potentiality. The Ishvara's symbol is the Circle with the point in the Center.
We read in Chuang Tzu: "The Point which is the pivot of the norm is the immobile Center of a circumference, on the periphery of which rolled all contingence, all distinctions and individualities." Egyptians called God as the Center of everything, or Tem, the pivot of all stars.
This Center and this circumference, besides, express the relation between our personal inside and external "part". If man identified oneself with the manifested and transitory world, then he will undergo the fate of this world. And the Center represented the Real Self in man. In every human world there is a place where God has manifested Himself to spread His grace therein. It is our life, wherever we are, we are always connected with the middle of a sacred circle.

The point appeared in the circle
And was not;
But it was the dot
That the circle begot.

The point appears
As a circle, as it revolves
In the eyes of him
Who a circle draws.

When the point
Completed the circle
Its beginning and end
Were one.

When the compass
Did the circle complete
It was wrapped up
And rested its feet.

Without existence
Not-being are we;
We who are Not
And You existence free.

I said the whole world was His dream;
Then I saw His dream was He.
Sweeter than the words of our guide,
Nimatullah knows no other words.

Love has Seven Names

El Greco «The Tears of Saint Peter»(detail)
Love has seven names.
Do you know what they are?
Rope, Light, Fire, Coal
make up its domain.

The others, also good,
more modest but alive:
Dew, Hell, the Living Water.
I name them here (for they
are in the Scriptures),
explaining every sign
for virtue and form.
I tell the truth in signs.
Love appears every day
for one who offers love.
That wisdom is enough.

Love is a ROPE, for it ties
and holds us in its yoke.
It can do all, nothing snaps it.
You who love must know.

The meaning of LIGHT
is known to those who
offer gifts of love,
approved or condemned.

The Scripture tell us
the symbol of COAL:
the one sublime gift
God gives the intimate soul.

Under the name of FIRE, luck,
bad luck, joy or no joy,
consumes. We are seized
by the same heat from both.

When everything is burnt
in its own violence, the DEW,
coming like a breeze, pauses
and brings the good.

LIVING WATER (its sixth name)
flows and ebbs
as my love grows
and disappears from sight.

HELL (I feel its torture)
damns, covering the world.
Nothing escapes. No one has grace
to see a way out.

Take care, you who wish
to deal with names
for love. Behind their sweetness
and wrath, nothing endures.
Nothing but wounds and kisses.

Though love appears far off,
you will move into its depth.

---by Hadewijch, a 13th century female poet and mystic.

Lion

The Lion is a well-known and widespread symbol. This noble beast is the most represented animal in visual arts, sometimes a symbol of majesty and power, courage and justice, sometimes a mark of royalty, sometimes an astrological symbol.
The Hindu name for Leo is Simha, which word is said to be powerful in its utterance. Narasimha, a half man (nara) and half lion (simha),  is the fourth incarnation or avatar of Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared in a divine human form with a lion face to protect his devotee and to stop religiousness. Lion-headed Sarabeswara and Prathiyankara Devi are also worshiped as the savior against evils.
Certainly, the lion personifies the big protecting force. Sphinx or the Egyptian goddess of war Sekhmet, with a lion head, or Mithra, the Sun god of Persia, with a lion face, the Assyrian Gate Guardians of Babylon or the Etruscan lion with wings at the entrance of the Temple mountain at Troy are well known examples for this. Ancient Egyptians believed that the eye of the sun was the great lion-form of Shu.
In Hindu cosmology, Simha also is the emblem of the solar cycle, representing the life and duration of the sun. Thus, we see a meant parallel between the sun as the heart of the solar system and the lion who rules the human heart. Probably, it is a symbol of connection between the spiritual sun to the spiritual heart of man.
In Islamic tradition, this motif is also popular. For example, the Lion and Sun is one of the main emblems of Iran. In religious context, the qualities of bravery, strength, and valor of lion is mentioned in the Koran, the traditions of the Prophet.
In Christianity, the Lion is one of the four living creatures described around the throne of the Almighty and they are chosen as symbols of the four evangelists. Mark is traditionally represented by the Lion.
There is a interesting idea that the lion is rumored to sleep with one eye open. In that case he always is ready to wake up and to spark the fire to shine the way of the human soul to the final victory, to the Sun.

A Man's Heart

Proverbs 16, The Holy Bible

1 The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.
2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.
3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
8 Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues without right.
9 A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
10 A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment.
11 A just weight and balance are the LORD's: all the weights of the bag are his work.
12 It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.
13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.
14 The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.
15 In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favor is as a cloud of the latter rain.
16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.
18 Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
20 He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.
21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.
22 Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.
23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.
24 Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.
26 He that laboreth, laboreth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
27 An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.
28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.
29 A violent man enticeth his neighbor, and leadeth him into the way that is not good.
30 He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things: moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.
31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.
32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
33 The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

To Enter The Door -3

Continuing a theme To Enter The Door -1 & 2, here are some poems today.

When we knock at some doors,
Thinking that that they are locked,
A polite sweet voice chimes from within,
“Door is open, please step inside”.

When we push open some doors,
Thinking that they are kept open,
A gruff, and harsh voice shouts,
“door is locked, go away.”

The doors seldom reflect ,
The desire of the voices within.
--- Vasant Chendil, translated by P.R.Ramachander

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
--- Rumi

Rise early at dawn, when our storytelling begins.
In the dead of the night, when all other doors are
locked,
the door for the Lovers to enter opens.
Be wide awake in the dark when Lovers
begin fluttering around the Beloved's window,
like homing pigeons arriving with flaming bodies.
--- Abu-Said Abil-Kheir

Belief brings me close to You
but only to the door.
It is only by disappearing into
Your mystery
that I will come in.
---Hakim Sanai Al-Ghaznavi

There was a Door to which I found no Key:
There was a Veil through which I could not see:
Some little Talk awhile of Me and Thee
There seemed -- and then no more of Thee and Me.
--- Omar Khayyam

Forgiveness Sunday

In Eastern Orthodox Church, today is the Forgiveness Sunday. The forgiveness is the core message of Christianity but also a powerful tool to make us free from our painful memories, insults or remorses, all this unsolved problems. It refer to Gospel of Matthew (6:14-21):

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses...
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

According to orthodox rite, this day you can ask forgiveness of every person you meet this day, but especially people whom you might have really done some harm, or just your relatives and friends (we never know if by chance we could have hurt anyone). Traditionally, one person greets another and says please forgive me, in response he/she says God will forgive you. And I forgive too.
Remebering this wonderful tradition today, let me ask each of you,
Please Forgive Me.

It acts like love-music-
it reaches toward the face, touches it,
and tries to let you know
God's promise: that all will be okay.
It acts like love-music and,
tells the feet,
"You don't have to be so burdened."
My body is covered with wounds
this world made,
but I longed to kiss God, even when He said,
"Could you also kiss the hand that caused
each scar,
for you will not find me until
you do."
It does that music helps us
to forgive.

Kaali Hridayam

HRIDAYAM is the tantric term referring to the aspect of mantra which is to be visualized at the heart center or to be synchronized with the energy of the heart center; a practice consisting of a recitation of a long set of mantras that enables the practitioner to induce a state of oneness between the power of mantra and oneself.

Maha Shivaratri

We live in a universe in which anything can happen for no reason, without any purpose - it's an improbable and not clear for us but such beautiful lila.We are here as play, with the freedom that binds us only to Love. It can be so difficultly sometimes. But everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty, is lila too. And our simple joys, too, may conceal diviner gifts. Even if we do not know it, we are pilgrims together.  And courage we have helps us to wending through wilderness. On great Maha Shivaratri, I wish you Shiva's blessing and greet you with profound esteem, with love and with the prayer. Happy Maha Shivaratri! Har Har Mahadev!

Glory to Hara, Bearer of the Ganges. Glory to Shiva, Lord of Girija and Gauri. By your grace, Lord of the World, protect me forever.

On Mount Kailas is a forest of wish-fulfilling trees, bees that make a sweet humming sound, cukoos sing and beautiful swans sport there. Peacocks spread their plumes and dance with joy.

In that pleasant spot is a mansion bedecked with precious stones. There, Gauri plays near Hara, and pleases her Lord with her adornments.

O Shiva, You have the luster of shining camphor. You have five heads, three eyes, and the moon on Your crest. You have a serpent round Your neck. You have beautiful braided hair on Your head. Your forehead is adorned with fire. You hold the damaru, the trident, and the bow pinaka. You hold a human skull in Your hand.

The conch shell is blown; the metallic drum resounds. Brahma and Vishnu are waving lights and reciting the Vedic hymns before You. Thus having hailed His soft lotus feet and having bowed down to the Lord, one gazes steadily at the great God and at the Lord of gods with beneficience.

ruṇḍai racayati mālāṁ pannagamupavītaṁ, śiva pannagamupavītaṁ,

om hara hara hara mahādeva ||
You adorn Yourself with a garland of skulls and wear a serpent as the sacred thread. Parvati is at Your left side. Your form is very beautiful. Your whole body is smeared with ashes. You have a bull in your banner. O Hara, the beneficial Bestower of bliss! You remove all miseries.

dhyānaṁ āratisamaye hṛdaye iti kṛtvā, śiva hṛdaye iti kṛtvā,

We meditate upon You, who sport in the hearts of devotees and who are the Lord of Trijata. We bow down to you the Lord. One who daily recites this song and one who hears it with devotion attains oneness with Shiva.

om jaya gaṅgādhara hara śiva, jaya girijādhīśa śiva, jaya gaurīnātha |

Glory to Shiva, the Lord of Gauri. By your mercy O Lord of the world, protect me forever.
