In early times in Japan, bamboo-and-paper lanterns were used with candles inside. A blind man, visiting a friend one night, was offered a lantern to carry home with him.

"I do not need a lantern," he said. "Darkness or light is all the same to me."

"I know you do not need a lantern to find your way," his friend replied, "but if you don't have one, someone else may run into you. So you must take it."

The blind man started off with the lantern and before he had walked very far someone ran squarely into him. "Look out where you are going!" he exclaimed to the stranger. "Can't you see this lantern?"

"Your candle has burned out, brother," replied the stranger.

About Doubt

An ignorant man is lost, faithless, and filled with self-doubt;
A soul that harbors doubt has no joy, not in this world or the next. (Bhagavad Gita 4:40)

Doubt is an unavoidable part of the life experience. And that is a normal part of one's spiritual journey also. But how it is painful! It is similar to tunnels of darkness without any gleam. At this moment it is difficult for understanding but these times need be only moments in one's journey and attestations to the spiritual energy to be discovered within faith. Doubt is the impetus for spiritual renewal, stimulating one to question and to search for answers. It is not a place of permanent repose.
Yes, the doubt is some sort of tabu in religion. But we are human beings, who feel the need to reflect on their belief. Any aspect of human life can be subject to reflection; religion is no exception. Even those who consider themselves with no religion may have moments of doubt about their atheism. Skeptical or inquiring doubt can often be beneficial. For instance, in many spiritual traditions you are encouraged to be skeptical of blindly accepting beliefs and to explore through your own direct experience what is true.  For example, in Islam, Al-Ghazali experienced a deep crisis of scepticism; he doubted about his senses and his knowledge, but he claimed that doubt was his habit to search for the true reality of things. Thus, doubt and religion cannot be separated, and everyone should look for the truth to better understand his convictions and answer his doubts.
The similar story has occurred to one of Christian apostles, Saint Thomas (or Doubting Thomas), who refused to believe that the resurrected Jesus had appeared to the ten other apostles, until he could see and feel the wounds received by Jesus on the cross.
"The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" by Caravaggio
Also, Saint Peter almost did walk on water until he doubted. We, the flesh will always be in doubt. It's our character. To overcome it, yogis in India still go into the forest to discover spirit for themselves, and the same is true of the Desert Fathers in the Christian tradition.
In Hinduism, we can verify our knowledge in three ways: by sruti, the sacred scriptures; yukti, the knowledge or reason; and by anubhuti, or personal experience. But separately, each of these points also can give in to our doubt. For example, we can consider that scriptures describe experience of others and by the limited means, the reason solely can develop thoughts infinitely, and personal experience can be deceptive and delusive, and we can always wait some decisive proof. So, to be assured, our knowledge or personal experience must be testified to by the scriptures, and  corroborated by reason. Then, without a shadow of a doubt, you see. An analogy to this which is often used is if someone holds up a flower in front of your face, and your eyes are open, and your mind is backing them, do you see the flower or not?
Doubt is an element of risk that must be affirmed by courage, but it can return us from despair to a new content of belief. After all, Doubting Thomas does not stay a doubter. With hope, I want to remember again the words from the Bhagavad Gita: When righteousness is weak and faints and unrighteousness exults in pride, then my Spirit arises on earth.

Kanaka Dhara Stotra

Kanaka Dhara Stotra by Adi Shankara, dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi.

Angam hare pulaka bhooshanamasrayanthi,
Bhringanga neva mukulabharanam thamalam,
Angikrithakhila vibhuthirapanga leela,
Mangalyadasthu mama mangala devathaya.

To Sri Hari Who wears supreme happiness as Ornament,
The Goddess Lakshmi is attracted,
Like the black bees getting attracted,
To the unopened buds of black Tamala tree,
Let Her Who is the Goddess of all good things,
Grant me a glance that will bring prosperity.
Mugdha muhurvidhadhadathi vadhane Murare,
Premathrapapranihithani gathagathani,
Mala dhrishotmadhukareeva maheth pale ya,
Sa ne sriyam dhisathu sagarasambhavaya.

Again and again return, those glances,
Filled with hesitation and love,
Of Her Who is born to the ocean of milk,
To the face of Murari,
Like the honey bees to the pretty blue lotus,
And let those glances shower me with wealth.
Ameelithaksha madhigamya mudha Mukundam
Anandakandamanimeshamananga thanthram,
Akekara stiththa kaninika pashma nethram,
Bhoothyai bhavenmama bhjangasayananganaya.

With half closed eyes stares she on Mukunda,
Filled with happiness, shyness and the science of love,
On the ecstasy filled face with closed eyes of her Lord,
And let Her, Who is the wife of Him who sleeps on the snake,
Shower me with wealth.
Bahwanthare madhujitha srithakausthube ya,
Haravaleeva nari neela mayi vibhathi,
Kamapradha bhagavatho api kadaksha mala,
Kalyanamavahathu me kamalalayaya

He who has won over Madhu,
Wears the Kousthuba as ornament,
And also the garland of glances, of blue Indraneela,
Filled with love to protect and grant wishes to Him,
Of Her Who lives on the lotus,
And let those also fall on me,
And grant me all that is good..
Kalambudhaalithorasi kaida bhare,
Dharaadhare sphurathi yaa thadinganeva,
Mathu samastha jagatham mahaneeya murthy,
Badrani me dhisathu bhargava nandanaya

Like the streak of lightning in black dark cloud,
She is shining on the dark, broad chest,
Of He who killed Kaidaba,
And let the eyes of the great mother of all universe,
Who is the daughter of Sage Bharghava,
Fallon me lightly and bring me prosperity.
Praptham padam pradhamatha khalu yat prabhavath,
Mangalyabhaji madhu madhini manamathena,
Mayyapadetha mathara meekshanardham,
Manthalasam cha makaralaya kanyakaya.

The God of love could only reach,
The killer of Madhu,
Through the power of her kind glances,
Loaded with love and blessing
And let that side glance,
Which is auspicious and indolent,
Fall on me.
Viswamarendra padhavee bramadhana dhaksham,
Ananda hethu radhikam madhu vishwoapi,
Eshanna sheedhathu mayi kshanameekshanartham,
Indhivarodhara sahodharamidhiraya

Capable of making one as king of Devas in this world,
Her side long glance of a moment,
Made Indra regain his kingdom,
And is making Him who killed Madhu supremely happy.
And let her with her blue lotus eyes glance me a little.
Ishta visishtamathayopi yaya dhayardhra,
Dhrishtya thravishta papadam sulabham labhanthe,
Hrishtim prahrushta kamlodhara deepthirishtam,
Pushtim krishishta mama pushkravishtaraya.

To her devotees and those who are great,
Grants she a place in heaven which is difficult to attain,
Just by a glance of her compassion filled eyes,
Let her sparkling eyes which are like the fully opened lotus,
Fall on me and grant me all my desires.
Dhadyaddhayanupavanopi dravinambhudaraam,
Asminna kinchina vihanga sisou vishanne,
Dhushkaramagarmmapaneeya chiraya dhooram,
Narayana pranayinee nayanambhuvaha.

Please send your mercy which is like wind,
And shower the rain of wealth on this parched land,
And quench the thirst of this little chataka bird,
And likewise, drive away afar my load of sins,
Oh, darling of Narayana,
By the glance from your cloud like dark eyes.
Gheerdhevathethi garuda dwaja sundarithi,
Sakambhareethi sasi shekara vallebhethi,
Srishti sthithi pralaya kelishu samsthitha ya,
Thasyai namas thribhvanai ka guros tharunyai.

She is the goddess of Knowledge,
She is the darling of Him who has Garuda as flag,
She is the power that causes of death at time of deluge,
And she is the wife of Him who has the crescent,
And she does the creation, upkeep and destruction at various times,
And my salutations to this lady who is worshipped by all the three worlds.

Twaam murari hridayeswareem bhaje

He who worships your sidelong glances,
Is blessed by all known wealth and prosperity,
And so my salutations by word, thought and deed,
To the queen of the heart of my Lord Murari.
Sarasija nilaye saroja hasthe,
Dhavalathamamsuka gandha maya shobhe,

Tribhuvana bhoothikari praseeda mahye

She Who sits on the Lotus,
She Who has lotus in her hands,
She Who is dressed in dazzling white,
She Who shines in garlands and sandal paste,
The Goddess who is the consort of Hari,
She Who gladdens the mind,
And She Who confers prosperity on the three worlds,
Be pleased to show compassion to me.
Dhiggasthibhi kanaka kumbha mukha vasrushta,
Sarvahini vimala charu jalaapluthangim,
Prathar namami jagathaam janani masesha,
Lokadhinatha grahini mamrithabhi puthreem.

Those eight elephants from all the diverse directions,
Pour from out from golden vessels,
The water from the Ganga which flows in heaven,
For your holy purifying bath,
And my salutations in the morn to you,
Who is the mother of all worlds,
Who is the house wife of the Lord of the worlds,
And Who is the daughter of the ocean which gave nectar.
Kamale Kamalaksha vallabhe twam,
Karuna poora tharingithaira pangai,
Avalokaya mamakinchananam,
Prathamam pathamakrithrimam dhyaya

She Who is the Lotus,
She Who is the consort,
Of the Lord with Lotus like eyes,
She Who has glances filled with mercy,
Please turn your glance on me,
Who is the poorest among the poor,
And first make me the vessel,
To receive your pity and compassion.
Sthuvanthi ye sthuthibhirameeranwaham,
Thrayeemayim thribhuvanamatharam ramam,
Gunadhika guruthara bhagya bhagina,
Bhavanthi the bhuvi budha bhavithasayo.

He Who recites these prayers daily,
On Her Who is personification of Vedas,
On Her Who is the mother of the three worlds,
On Her Who is Goddess Rema,
Will be blessed without doubt,
With all good graceful qualities,
With all the great fortunes that one can get,
And would live in the world,
With great recognition from even the learned.

See and Shine!

Modern science consider our eye as a purely passive organ, just as the act of seeing remains a passive process for most of the human race. Are you sure of it? Even only from the materialistic point of view, the process of seeing is largely a mental activity. The eye sees sharply only what it is concentrating upon, a process greatly influenced by acquired experience. Human vision involves mental projection as well as mental receptivity. But the real vision, you know, is not just with the two physical eyes, but it is with the eye of the soul. Here to see means to know. In all senses, the eye is like the intelligent intermediary between the Sun as the source and our inner light. It is equally true for physical and spiritual eye both.
Given that the Sun is symbolic of Spirit, then the process of seeing represents a spiritual act and symbolizes understanding. And then, the human inner eye can become itself a tiny sun. It is in this sense that Jesus said "The eye is the light of the body; if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." But it was impossible without a Light Source. Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya... And, who knows, maybe it is It who focus Its rays through our eyes into the world. Not only inside but also outside. So, our eyes is that  through which the higher spiritual light can manifest!  When we look at each other, our luminosity must interact with that of another. Maybe this ineffable connection bears witness to the inseparability of our inner natures? And the seeing of oneself in another can create unbreakable bonds between souls. I wish you to keep always your internal light and to shine. Love.

Yama Ashtakam

Om Yamaaya Namaha
In this sculpture, Yama, the Lord of Death and Ruler of the Underworld, stands atop his vehicle, the water buffalo. A human figure lies trampled beneath, symbolizing the conquest of illusion. Hands raised in apan mudra, his robust form is adorned with a billowing sash, chains inlaid with turquoise, a garland of human heads and a skull crown. His separately cast consort Yami, stands at his left wearing an animal skin holding a kapala, or skull cup in her left hand. Yama is one of the primary Dharmapalas, or protectors of Buddhist law.
Nedd to note: Yamaraja is the personification of death, but in contrast to others dangerous deities, Yama  come to collect people in "ordinary" dying. He is a divine agent, who preside over the heavens where people get after death.
The octet on Yama composed by Savithri. From the first chapter of Brahma Vaivartha Maha Purana.

1.Thapasaa Dharma Rajaya pushkare Bhaskare puraa,
Dharmasam yam sutham prapa Dharmarajam namamyaham.
In the olden times Sun God got Yamuna and Dharma Raja as children, and the Son who is the follower of dharma, was named as King of dharma.
2.Samathaa sarva bhootheshu yasya sarvasya sakshina,
Atho yan nama samanam ithi tham pranamamyaham.
He treated every living being as equal and is the witness of everything, and thus he was equal to his name and I salute him.
3.Yenaa anthascha krutho viswe sarveshaam jeevinaam param,
Karmo anuroopa kalena tham kruthantham namamyaham.
He made all beings of the world die, at the proper time and I salute him who puts an end.
4.Bbarthi dandam dandachyaa paapinaam shudhi hethave,
Namami tham Danda dharam ya saastha sarva karmanam.
He gave punishment using his scepter to the sinners to make them pure, I salute he who holds the scepter, who is the teacher of all duties.
5.Viswe ya kavalayathyeva sarvayuschapi santhatham,
Atheeva durnirvarya cha tham kaalam pranamamyaham.
Since he was swallowing the world and he always takes away all souls, at highly exceptional circumstances and I salute that Kala.
6.Thapaswi Vaishnavo dharmo samyami vijithendriya,
Jeevinaam karma phaladham tham Yamam pranamamyaham.
An ascetic following the Vaishnava Dharma, one who has won over his senses, and one who awards the results of Karma to beings is Yama, and I salute him.
7.Swa athmaramascha sarvagno mithram
Punyakruthaam bhaveth,
Paapinam klesadham yasya , puthro mithro namamyaham.
Rejoicing in his own self, One who knows all, One who is a friend of those who do good deeds, and One who troubles sinners is the son of Sun God and I salute him.
8.Yajjanma Brahmaano vamse jwalantham Brahma thejasaa,
Yo dhyayathi Param brahma Brahma vamsam namamyaham.
He took birth in the clan of Brahma and shined with effulgence of Brahmana, and he meditates on the divine Brahman, and I salute the clan of Brahma.

Phala Sruthi
9.Ithyukthwaa saa cha Savithri prananama Yamam Mune,
Yamasthaam Vishnu Bhajanam karmapakam uvacha ha.
Oh sage after saying this Savithri saluted that Yama, and Yama heard her praise of Lord Vishnu due to her ripening of her Karma.
10.Idham Yamastakam nithyam prathar uthaya padeth,
Yamath thasya bhayam Nasthi sarva paapath pramuchyathe.
If this octet on Yama is read daily as soon as one gets up in the morning, He will have no fear of Yama and would get rid of all his sins.
11.Maha Paapi yathi paden nithyam BHakthyaa cha Narada,
Yama karothi tham shudham kaya vyuhena nischitham.
Oh Narada, if a great sinner reads it daily with devotion, Yama will make him pure from at the time of his soul separating from body.
Ithi Sri Brahma Vaivartha Maha purane prakruthi khande Savithri krutha Sri yamashtakam sampoornam.

Yama about Karma and Salvation

From Varaha Purana ( Chapter 47).

Yamadharmaraja advised Sage Narada that primarily whatever Karma (action) is executed by a person is paid back in the same intensity and volume. It is one's own conscience that is his / her friend or foe. There is nothing else that is the deciding factor. A person is bound by his / her past actions. This is what fate is all about. To oversimplify that fate or Maya is responsible for any happening is improper as that happening had its roots in one's erstwhile action. The cycle of action and reaction decides about the movement (as well as the speed and volume) of further action and reaction and these inner wheels specific to a particular human being decide the movement of the larger cycle of the current and subsequent lives. In other words: "As you sow, so shall you reap" or what is sown is what is produced.Only the foolish human beings blame God for their miseries, little realising that actions need to be performed with total detachment as attachments in current life tend to get transferred to the next births. Narada intervened at this stage and asked Lord Yama that apart from what a person’s conscience, action and past history reveals, is there any other Force which might mitigate or add the impact of Karma or one’s action? In reply, Lord Yama greeted Paramatma or the Supreme Energy who has neither beginning nor end but is Everlasting, All Pervasive, and All-Knowing; it is that Paramatma who is the Creator, Preserver and also the Destroyer; indeed He is the only Force that could subtract or even remodel the impact of the person’s actions! It is He who is impartial and treats all the beings of His Creation equally without favour or fear. It is He who realises Tatvartha, Prakriti and Purusha and is unaffected or influenced by a person’s deeds or the values of these deeds. It is He who could make a precise assessment of a person’s Dhyan (meditation), its quality or quantum. It is He who could objectively decide the swing of joys and sorrows of any human being and choose to grant or not yet grant Salvation, keeping in view the totality of the person’s Karma. Be it a Saint or Sinner, a human being is given balanced evaluation by Paramatma without anger, prejudice or any preconceived notion, for perhaps a Saint might falter once or a Sinner might act with improvement! He might provide Mukti to a person practising Pranayama with concentration and by burning off lowly emotions and impulses. A person who is desireless, devoid of attachments, and leaves the Life ideally is blessed by Paramatma and grants Mukti. A person who is industrious, patient, balanced, angerless, devoid of jealousy and does not eye on possessions of others is qualified for attaining Mukthi. He, who is engrossed in doing service to his learned Guru, follows a non-violent way of life and keeps away from lowly deeds, performs only noble tasks and discards the wrong ones shall take forward steps to Salvation. When a person is not interested visiting such Tirthas as are not approved by his conscience such as pujas of questionable deities is not a sinner but a discreet being and is hence deserving of Salvation. As soon as one notices a venerable and learned person in a company and automatically approaches him and touches his feet, he is indeed on the right path towards Salvation.
