Love Poems of Rumi

If anyone asks you
how the perfect satisfaction
of all our sexual wanting
will look, lift your face
and say,

Like this.

When someone mentions the gracefulness
of the nightsky, climb up on the roof
and dance and say,

Like this.

If anyone wants to know what "spirit" is,
or what "God’s fragrance" means,
lean your head toward him or her.
Keep your face there close.

Like this.

When someone quotes the old poetic image
about clouds gradually uncovering the moon,
slowly loosen knot by knot the strings
of your robe.

Like this.

If anyone wonders how Jesus raised the dead,
don’t try to explain the miracle.
Kiss me on the lips.

Like this. Like this.

When someone asks what it means
to "die for love," point
here.

If someone asks how tall I am, frown
and measure with your fingers the space
between the creases on your forehead.

This tall.

The soul sometimes leaves the body, the returns.
When someone doesn’t believe that,
walk back into my house.

Like this.

When lovers moan,
they’re telling our story.

Like this.

I am a sky where spirits live.
Stare into this deepening blue,
while the breeze says a secret.

Like this.

When someone asks what there is to do,
light the candle in his hand.

Like this.

How did Joseph’s scent come to Jacob?

Huuuuu.

How did Jacob’s sight return?

Huuuu.

A little wind cleans the eyes.

Like this.

When Shams comes back from Tabriz,
he’ll put just his head around the edge
of the door to surprise us

Like this.

Love is the Water of Life

Everything other than love for the most beautiful God

though it be sugar- eating.

What is agony of the spirit?

To advance toward death without seizing

hold of the Water of Life.

Lovers
O lovers, lovers it is time
to set out from the world.
I hear a drum in my soul's ear
coming from the depths of the stars.

Our camel driver is at work;
the caravan is being readied.
He asks that we forgive him
for the disturbance he has caused us,
He asks why we travelers are asleep.

Everywhere the murmur of departure;
the stars, like candles
thrust at us from behind blue veils,
and as if to make the invisible plain,
a wondrous people have come forth

In The Arc Of Your Mallet

Don't go anywhere without me.
Let nothing happen in the sky apart from me,
or on the ground, in this world or that world,
without my being in its happening.
Vision, see nothing I don't see.
Language, say nothing.
The way the night knows itself with the moon,
be that with me. Be the rose
nearest to the thorn that I am.

I want to feel myself in you when you taste food,
in the arc of your mallet when you work,
when you visit friends, when you go
up on the roof by yourself at night.

There's nothing worse than to walk out along the street
without you. I don't know where I'm going.
You're the road, and the knower of roads,
more than maps, more than love.

***
Love is reckless; not reason.

Reason seeks a profit.

Love comes on strong,

consuming herself, unabashed.

Yet, in the midst of suffering,

Love proceeds like a millstone,

hard surfaced and straightforward.

Having died of self-interest,

she risks everything and asks for nothing.

Love gambles away every gift God bestows.

Without cause God gave us Being;

without cause, give it back again.

Abd el-Kader

`Abd al-Qādir al-Jazā'irī (6 September 1808 - 26 May 1883, in Arabic عبد القادر الجزائري) was an Algerian Islamic scholar, Sufi, political and military leader who led a struggle against the French invasion in the mid-nineteenth century, for which he is seen by the Algerians as their national hero.

"If the divine Mercy grants him the knowledge of himself, then his adoration will be pure; and, for him, paradise and hell, recompense, spiritual degrees and all created things will be as though God had never created them. He will not accord them any importance, nor will he take them into consideration, except to the extent that it is prescribed by the divine Law and Wisdom. For then he will know Who is the sole Agent."

"But, in conformity to His wisdom it was right that afterwards the Prophet should be sent back form the vision of pure Unity and that he should return… toward the separative vision. For, He created man and jinn only that they should worship Him and know Him -- and, if they remained at the degree of pure Unity, there would be none to worship Him. In this separative vision, the Worshipped and the worshipper, the Lord and the servant, the Creator and the creature are again perceived."

"The pleasure and the love of God for His creatures constitute the original state. His pleasure and love are the means by which He has brought His creatures into existence and are the cause of that bringing into existence. He who knows that he possesses neither being nor act rediscovers himself in that original state of pleasure and divine love."

"In the same way, when there is the state of extinction (fana') -- which the men of the way also call "union" (ittihad) -- the worshipper and the Worshipped, the Lord and the servant, disappear together. If there is no worshipper, there is no Worshipped; and if there is no servant, there is no Lord. For, when two terms are correlative, the disappearance of one necessarily brings about the disappearance of the other, and therefore they disappear together."

"The divine Reality, when it "combines" with the creatures in a strictly conceptual mode, is hidden to the eyes of the spiritually veiled, who see only the creatures. Conversely, it is the creatures that disappear in the eyes of the masters of the Unicity of contemplation(wahdat al-shuhud), for they see only God alone. Thus, both God and the creatures hide the other…"

"God has stolen my [illusory] "I" from me and has broght me near to my [real] "I" … The colors have returned ot the pure primoridal white. The voyage has reached its end and everything other than Him has ceased to exist. All attribution, every aspect and all relation being abolished, the original state is re-established."

"Turn your face toward the sacred Mosque (Koran 2:144,149,150)"
Commentary:This means: "Turn the [divine] face which is particular to you"…

This face is the secret (sirr) through which your spirit subsists… It is the source of man's being and the command [formulated in the verse] is in reality concerned with this. God … does not consider your exterior form but only your heart -- which is the "divine face" proper to each of you, and it is this "divine face" which, in you, "contains" God even though His sky and His earth cannot contain Him… He who turns (toward the sacred Mosque} with his body alone, without also turning this face, has not truly turned…"

"Everything which is other than Allah is "hidden" in non-being, even if it appears to spiritually veiled beings to be endowed with existence. But the sage does not concern himself with what is non-being and does not make it the aim of his acts."

"Then God -- may He be exalted! -- said to me, "What are you?" I replied, "I am two things, according to two different relations. With respect to You, I am the Eternal, forever and ever. I am the necessary Being who epiphanizes himself. My necessity proceeds from the necessity of Your essence and my eternity from the eternity of Your knowledge and Your attributes.

"With respect to me, I am pure non-being who has never breathed the perfume of existence, the adventitious being who remains nonexistent in his adventitiousness. I only possess being so long as I am present with You and for You. Left to myself and absent from You I am one who is not, even while he is (fa-ana mafqud mawjud)."

"And He is with you wherever you are … (Koran 57:4)
Commentary: … The companionship expressed by "with" is that of the Being and the non-being, for there is no Being other than Allah…

If Allah -- May He be exalted! -- was not, by His very Essence, which is the Being of all that is, "with" the creatures, we could not attribute being to any of these createres and they could not be perceived either by the senses, by the imagination, or by the intellect. It is their 'being with' which assures to creatres a relation with Being. Better yet, it is their being itself. This 'being with' embraces all things, whether they are sublime or lowly, great or small. It is through it that they subsist. He is the pure Being by which 'that which is' is. The 'being with' of Allah consists therefore in the fact that He is with us through His essence; that is, through that which we call the divine Self (huwiyya), universally present …

Indications of this divine 'being with' are contained in the following verses:

And He is witness of all things (Koran 34:47)
And Allah, behind them, encompasses them (Koran 85:20)
Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah (Koran 2:116)

Sri Guru charana saroja raj,
Nija mana mukura sudhar,

Sri Ram embraced Hanumanji saying: "Let the thousand - tongued sheshnaag sing your glories"
Sanakadhika brahmadhi muneesa,
Narada saradha sahitha aheesa, 14
Yama, Kubhera dikapala jahamthey,
Kavi kovidha kahi sakaim kahamthey, 15
The sanaka sages, the Lord Brahma, Sage Narada, Goddess Saraswathi, the lord Shiva, the god of death, god of wealth, the guardians of directions, and great poets tried to explain your glory adequately but failed..

And getting him again the kingship,

Prabhu mudrika meli mukha maheem,
Jaladhi landhi gaye acharaja naaheem. 19

You crossed the ocean, holding the Lord’s ring, In your mouth, and this is nothing surprising for you,
Durgama kaj jagat ke jethe,

You provide victory in difficult times to the people of the world and give your blessings
Rama dware thuma rakhawale,
Hotha na agyan bina paisare. 21

You are the guard to the door to the mind of Rama,
And without your permission, none can enter there.
Sab sukha lihai thumhari sarana,
Thum rakshak kahu ko darna, 22

All pleasures start from you,
And when you give protection,
Why is there a need to fear any one,
Aapana theja samarou aapai,
Theenom loka hankthe kaapain, 23

You alone can control the burst of your energy, seeing which all the three worlds shiver,
Bhootha pisacha nikata nahi aavai,
Mahabeera Jap naama sunavai. 24

Evil spirits and ghosts do not come near, when they hear the name of the great hero, Hanuman.
Nasai rog harai sab peera,
Japatha niranthara hanumath beera. 25

Diseases and sufferings are destroyed, when the Name of Hanuman is repeated always.
Sankata se Hanuman chudavai,
Mana karma vachana dhyana jo lavai. 26

Hanuman will save you from sorrow,
Who meditates on him with mind, action and words.
Sab par Ram thapasvi raja,
Tinake kaja sakala thum sanja. 27

You fulfilled all jobs of Rama, Who fulfilled desires of all his devotees.
Aur manoradha jo koi lavai,
Soye amitha jeevan phala Pavai. 28

And any of those who bring their desires to you
Would get them fulfilled and get a better life.
Charahu yuga prathap thumhara,
Hai parasidha jagatha ujiyara. 29

In the four eons your name is famous, and is famous all over the three worlds.
Sadu santh ke thum rakware,
Asura nikanddana rama dhulare. 30

You protect the sages and devout,
You kill asuras as per wish of great Rama.
Ashta sidhi nava nidhi ke datha,
Aasa vara dheen Janaki matha. 31

You were granted eight powers, and nine types of wealth, by the boon of mother Sita,
Ram rasayana thumhare pasa,
Sada rahow Raghupathi ke dasa, 32

You have with you the essence of Rama,
And would always remain his slave,
Thumhare bhajan ram ko pavai,
Janma janma ke dukha bisaravai, 33
Antha kala Raghupati pura jayee,
Jahan janma Haribaktha kahayee, 34

By devotion to you, one gets Rama,
And get removed sorrows of several births,
And at death he goes to the place of Rama,
And all his life would be pointed to as devotee of Vishnu.
Aur devatha chitha na darayee,
Hanumath seyi sarva sukha karayee. 35

He who does not think about gods other than him,
Would get all pleasures from Hanuman himself.
Sankata harai, mitai sab peera,
Jo sumirai Hanumath bala beera. 36

All sorrows vanish and all obstacles are finished,
For him who always remembers the very strong Hanuman.
Jai jai jai Hanuman gosai
Krupa karahu Gurudeva kee nayi. 37

Victory, victory, victory to the saint Hanuman,
Oh great teacher please show mercy on us.
Yah satha baar pata kara joyi,
Chootahi bandhi, maha sukha hoi. 38

He who reads this one hundred times,
Would be freed from shackles and get great pleasure.
Jo yah pade Hanuman chaleesa,
Hoi sidhi sake goureesa. 39

Whoever reads this Hanuman forty,
Would get powers with Lord Shiva as witness.
Thulasidasa sada Hari Chera,
Keejai nada hrudaya maha dera. 40

Thulasi das who is always a devotee of Hari,
Requests Hari to reside in his mind always.

Jai Hanuman!

Raam Navami

Ramanavami is celebrated on the ninth day in the bright half of Chaitra and represents the birth anniversary of Rama - 14 april 2008. This day is observed as the marriage day of Rama and Sita.

Rama is venerated hero of the Ramayana epic, and one of the two most popular incarnations of Vishnu, along with Krishna. He was a great worshiper of Siva, and a Siva temple, called Rameshvaram, was built in his name at the southern tip of India.

Sita Devi is the Avatara of the Goddess Lakshmi, who is the eternal consort and female form of Vishnu. Just as Rama is the manifestation of perfect manhood, Sita idealizes the Perfect Woman through her performance of her duties to religion, as a wife to her husband and as a mother to her children, and collectively as a woman in human society.
When he is approximately 15 years of age, his Guru Vishwamitra takes the two princes to the Swayamvara ceremony for Sita. The challenge is to string the bow of Shiva, and shoot an arrow with it. This task is considered impossible for any ordinary king or living being, as this is the personal weapon of Shiva, more powerful, holy and of divine creation than conceivable.

While attempting to string the bow, Rama breaks it into two. This feat of unbelievable strength, to have broken the personal weapon of Shiva, spreads his fame across the worlds and seals his marriage to Sita.

The love of Rama and his lawfully wedded wife Sita is the theme and substance of the Ramayana. True to the image of the mythic hero, both the carnal and the sublime aspects are highlighted in this epic, as in the majority of heroic lore across the world.
Celebrating another aspect of their affection is the appreciation that theirs was a love in conformance with Dharma. Such a love is but a manifestation of god. For those who interpret Ramayana in a symbolic manner regard Sita as the individual soul and Rama as the Supreme Being. God sees and pursues the human soul till He secures it. Thus did Rama follow Sita's trail across astronomical distances to unite himself with her. Verily is the Supreme Lord eager to save us.
Present in Ramayana is the twin theme of love opposed to Dharma. This is the love Ravana felt for Sita and which prompted him to abduct this chaste lady. He coveted the wife of another, which was deemed a sin. Here it must be noted that labeling Ravana's intentions towards Sita as love is paradoxical to say the least. Not once during her captivity (twelve months) did Ravana make a physical advance towards Sita. Not that he couldn't have done so. She was far away from any of her sympathizers, and was but a prisoner in his kingdom on which he held a authoritative and unquestionable sway. Ravana was obsessed with the idea of generating in her heart an inkling of love for him. A fat chance he had. With her commitment to her Lord as adamantine and devoted as always, Sita, even during periods of extreme tribulations, never for a moment let any other man enter her thoughts other than Rama.
There are also other interpretations of the love story of Rama and Sita. In one such insight Sita is believed to be the female counterpart of the Highest Being, an embodiment of compassion and grace. Compassion is the Supreme Mother who rests enthroned in the heart of the Lord. When she casts her merciful glance on us, we reach the feet of god. Parvati's function in relation to Shiva and Lakshmi's in relation to Vishnu are both identical, and are thought to point to the same truth namely that God as father and God as mother are not distinct. Indeed if the Lord were to be parted from his compassion, our plight would be like that of Ravana, who separated Sita from her Lord Rama.

Love is a divine experience! Happy Raam Navami!

Happy Holi!

This auspicious festival of wedding of shrI pArvatI paramEshvara is celebrated as the festival of colors - Holi.When the Sun is shining in the Pisces sign(mIna rAsi) that is in the month of paN^guni (mid of March to mid of April) on the uththara naxaththiram on the Moons growing face (shukla paxam), this vratam is observed. This is the day Shakthi married Lord Shiva after a great austerity in the Himaalayas, as the daughter of Himavaan. It is also observed as the auspicious day when Lord Muruga married devaseenaa. This vratam is explained in the skandha purANam.

Observing this vratam will get one the great boon of shri Lord shankara's delight. It would bring much joy and comfort in life, lead to the abode of Lord Shiva and give the liberation.

MahA VishNu got wedded to Laxmi sincerely observing this vratam.
Brahma wedded Saraswati,
Indra wedded IndrANi,
Moon wedded the 27 stars,
sage Agastiya wedded Lobhamudra ...
The two daughters of vishhNu namely AmR^itavalli, Saundaryavalli were married to the six faced Lord as DevasEna and VaLLI.
The daughter of vedAN^ga R^ishhi called Sukesi got married to Nandi devar.
The two daughters of sage satyapUrNar pUrNa, pushhkaLai were wedded to mahA sAsthA. KAma got Rathi,
SIta got RAma,
JAmbhavati got KR^ishhNa,

and I got You my Love!!!

There are more stories. Holi, the festival of colour, is celebrated in all over India with great festivity and joy. On this day, people come out wearing pure white clothes and gether together in a common place where they play it with gay abandon.

Holi is supposed to be an exuberant show of goodwill and cheer. The riot of colours follows a revelry of colour play - quite unmatched in its boisterousness - and takes place amidst the sprinkling or the shower of coloured powder. And when this is combined with water it is anything but a damp squib. Everybody is welcome and everybody is pardoned for his or her revelry.

and sing:

O hori khele raghuveeraa avadh mein hori khele raghuveeraa
Hori khele raghuveeraa avadh mein hori khele raghuveeraa
Holi hai!!!

Maha Shiva Ratri

Shivaratri (literally: Shiva's night) is a festival of great significance. Esoterically, it is symbolic of the mystic union of Jiva (individual soul) with Paramatma (Supreme Godhead) and it represents the high state of spiritual realization wherein the world of relativity fades away and perfect peace and calm prevails. On this phenomenal night, the seeker remains fully aware of his identity with Shiva, the source of perennial joy, and thus experiences eternal Truth, Bliss and Beauty (Satyam Shivam Sundaram).

Shivaratri puja it signifies Lord Shiva's wedding with Uma, the beautiful daughter of the Himalayas. The divine marriage has a deeper, philosophic connotation. Shiva in His transcendental (para) aspect is inactive in creation. And His union with Shakti (energy or activating power), represented by His 'consorts', Uma, Parvati, Durga and Kali (variously named to signalize particular functions of the Divine Mother) make the infinite unfoldments in the cosmos possible. According to Saivism, Shiva represents the eternal process of creation and destruction, and His nature has primarily a two-fold aspect--immanent which pervades the universe and the transcendental that is beyond the universal manifestation of time, space and form.

An abhishekam to the crystal Siva Lingam of Kadavul Temple:

Ode to Shiva from Ramayana:

Om Namah Shivaya

Damaru pani shool pani hey Natarajan namo namo
Sheesh ganga bhasma anga karte dharan namo namo
Damaru pani shool pani hey Natarajan namo namo

Tum aadi-dev anaadi ho, tum anta-heen anant ho

Om namah Shivaya, namah Shivaya, namah Shivaya, namah Shivaya
Shashi lalaat tanaha viraat, hey trilochan namo namo
Damaru pani shool pani hey Natarajan namo namo

Nis-saar is sansaar mein, Shiv naam kewal saar hai
Om Namah Shivaya

Om namah Shivaya, namah Shivaya, namah Shivaya, namah Shivaya
Rom rom om om, hey aghanaashan namo namo
Damaru pani shool pani hey Natarajan namo namo

Dohakosa of Saraha

Saraha was born to a Brahmin family in Bengal when Buddhism was strongly supported by the court of the region. Saraha became a Buddhist monk and a noted scholar. However, he was expelled from his monastic order, some stories say for drinking alcohol.
He took to the life of a mendicant, a solitary spiritual wanderer. He became the disciple of a Buddhist master of Tantra and Kundalini practices.
Eventually Saraha met a young woman. She was of the low arrowsmith caste. He watched her intently forming each arrow, her gaze steady and not wandering to the left or the right. Saraha saw these actions symbolic of nondual awareness.
This woman shared similar spiritual aspirations, and the two were married. The couple travelled to holy locations, and cemeteries (considered good places for meditation and confronting the reality of death in the Tantric tradition). Since he could no longer support himself as a begging holy man, Saraha took up the trade of his wife's caste -- an arrowsmith. The name Saraha, in fact, refers to the making of arrows (or, more esoterically, it can be translated as "one who aims through the heart of duality").
The couple meditated deeply together and, it is said, they attained enlightenment together.
As a "fallen" monk, however, Saraha was denounced before the royal court. In his defense, Saraha recited a series of spontaneous realization songs, The Three Cycles of Doha. These songs became famous throughout Bengal, and he was widely acclaimed to be a legitimately realized sage.
Saraha began the Buddhist lineage that led to Naropa, Marpa, and Milarepa.

The Royal Song of Saraha (Dohakosa)

HOMAGE TO ARYAMANJUSRI!
Homage to the destroyer of demonic power!

The wind lashes calm waters into rollers and breakers;
The king makes multifarious forms out of unity,
Seeing many faces of this one Archer, Saraha.

The cross-eyed fool sees one lamp as two;
The vision and the viewer are one,
You broken, brittle mind!

Many lamps are lit in the house,
But the blind are still in darkness;

Sahaja is all-pervasive
But the fool cannot see what is under his nose.

Just as many rivers are one in the ocean
All half-truths are swallowed by the one truth;

The effulgence of the sun illuminates all dark corners.

Clouds draw water from the ocean to fall as rain on the earth
And there is neither increase nor decrease;

Just so, reality remains unaltered like the pure sky.

Replete with the Buddha's perfections
Sahaja is the one essential nature;

Beings are born into it and pass into it,
Yet there is neither existence nor non-existence in it.

Forsaking bliss the fool roams abroad,
Hoping for mundane pleasure;

Your mouth is full of honey now,
Swallow it while you may!

Fools attempt to avoid their suffering,
The wise enact their pain.

Drink the cup of sky-nectar
While others hunger for outward appearances.

Flies eat filth, spurning the fragrance of sandalwood;

Man lost to nirvana furthers his own confusion,
Thirsting for the coarse and vulgar.

The rain water filling an ox's hoof-print
Evaporates when the sun shines;

The imperfections of a perfect mind,
All are dissolved in perfection.

Salt sea water absorbed by clouds turns sweet;

The venom of passionate reaction
In a strong and selfless mind becomes elixir.

The unutterable is free of pain;
Non-meditation gives true pleasure.

Though we fear the dragon's
The nature of beginning and end is here and now,

And the first does not exist without the last;

The rational fool conceptualising the inconceivable

Separates emptiness from compassion.

The bee knows from birth

That flowers are the source of honey;

How can the fool know

That samsara and nirvana are one?

Facing himself in a mirror
The fool sees an alien form;

The mind with truth forgotten
Serves untruth's outward sham.

Flowers' fragrance is intangible
Yet its reality pervades the air,

Just as mandala circles are informed
By a formless presence.

Still water stung by an icy wind
Freezes hard in starched and jagged shapes;

In an emotional mind agitated by critical concepts
The unformed becomes hard and intractable.

Mind immaculate by nature is untouched
By samsara and nirvana's mud;

But just like a jewel lost in a swamp
Though it retains its lustre it does not shine.

As mental sloth increases pure awareness diminishes;
As mental sloth increases suffering also grows.

Shoots sprout from the seed and leaves from the branches.

Separating unity from multiplicity in the mind
The light grows dim and we wander in the lower realms;

Who is more deserving of pity than he
Who walks into fire with his eyes wide open?

Obsessed with the joys of sexual embrace
The fool believes he knows ultimate truth;

He is like someone who stands at his door
And, flirting, talks about sex.

The wind stirs in the House of Emptiness
Exciting delusions of emotional pleasure;

Fallen from celestial space, stung,
The tormented yogin faints away.

Like a brahmin taking rice and butter
Offering sacrifice to the flame,

He who visualises material things as celestial ambrosia
Deludes himself that a dream is ultimate reality.

Enlightening the House of Brahma in the fontanelle
Stroking the uvala in wanton delight,

Confused, believing binding pleasure to be spiritual release,
The vain fools calls himself a yogin.

Teaching that virtue is irrelevant to intrinsic awareness,
He mistakes the lock for the key;

Ignorant of the true nature of the gem
The fool calls green glass emerald.

His mind takes brass for gold,
Momentary peak experience for reality accomplished;

Clinging to the joy of ephemeral dreams
He calls his short-thrift life Eternal Bliss.

With a discursive understanding of the symbol EVAM,
Creating four seals through an analysis of the moment,

He labels his peak experience sahaja:
He is clinging to a reflection mistaken for the mirror.

Like befuddled deer leaping into a mirage of water
Deluded fools in their ignorance cling to outer forms

And with their thirst unslaked, bound and confined,
They idealise their prison, pretending happiness.

The relatively real is free of intellectual constructs,
And ultimately real mind, active or quiescent, is no-mind,

And this is the supreme,the highest of the high, immaculate;
Friends, know this sacred high!

In mind absorbed in samadhi that is concept-free,
Passion is immaculately pure;

Like a lotus rooted in the slime of a lake bottom,
This sublime reality is untouched by the pollution of existence.

Make solid your vision of all things as visionary dream
And you attain transcendence,

Instantaneous realisation and equanimity;
A strong mind binding the demons of darkness

Beyond thought your own spontaneous nature is accomplished.

Appearances have never ceased to be their original radiance,
And unformed, form never had a substantial nature to be grasped;

It is a continuum of unique meditation,
In an inactive, stainless, meditative mind that is no-mind.

Thus the I is intellect, mind and mind-forms,
I the world, all seemingly alien show,

I the infinite variety of vision-viewer,
I the desire, the anger, the mental sloth -And bodhicitta.

Now there is a lamp lit in spiritual darkness
Healing the splits riven by the intellect

So that all mental defilements are erased.

Who can define the nature of detachment?

It cannot be denied nor yet affirmed,
And ungraspable it is inconceivable.

Through conceptualisation fools are bound,
While concept-free there is immaculate sahaja.

The concepts of unity and multiplicity do not bring integration;
Only through awareness do sentient beings reach freedom.

Cognition of radiance is strong meditation;
Abide in a calm, quiescent mind.

Reaching the joy swollen land
Powers of seeing expand,

And there is joy and laughter;
Even chasing objects there is no separation.

From joy, buds of pure pleasure emerge,
Bursting into blooms of supreme pleasure,

And so long as outflow is contained
Unutterable bliss will surely mature.

What, where and by whom are nothing,
Yet the entire event is imperative.

Whether love and attachment or desirelessness
The form of the event is emptiness.

Like pigs we wallow in this sensual mire
But what can stain our pearly mind?

Nothing can ever contaminate it,
And by nothing can we ever be bound.

Hallaj

Mansur al-Hallaj is one of the more controversial figures of Sufism. Considered by many to be a great poet-saint, he was executed for blasphemy and sorcery.Orthodox religious authorities took offense at his poetry and teachings, particularly the line in one of his great poems "Ana 'l-Haqq," which translates as "I am the Real," but can also be translated as "I am the Truth" or "I am God." He was condemned by a council of theologians, imprisoned for nine years, and eventually put to death.

Poems by Hallaj

Your spirit is mingled with mine

Your spirit is mingled with mine as wine
is mixed with water;
whatever touches you touches me.
In all the stations of the soul you are I.

You glide between the heart and its casing

You glide between the heart and its casing as tears glide from the eyelid.
You dwell in my inwardness, in the depths of my heart, as souls dwell in bodies.
Nothing passes from rest to motion unless you move it in hidden ways,
O new moon.

Kill me, my faithful friends

Kill me, my faithful friends,
For in my being killed is my life.
Love is that you remain standing
In front of your Beloved
When you are stripped of all your attributes;
Then His attributes become your qualities.
Between me and You, there is only me.
Take away the me, so only You remain.

If They Only Knew

What earth is this
so in want of you they rise up on high
to seek you in heaven?
Look at them staring
at you
right before their eyes,
unseeing, unseeing, blind.. . .
I was patient,
but can the heart be patient of
its heart?
My spirit and yours
blend together
whether we are near one another
or far away.
I am you,
you,
my being,
end of my desire.
The most intimate of secret thoughts
envelopedand fixed along the horizon
in folds of light.
How? The "how" is known
along the outside,
while the interior of beyond
to and for the heart of being.
Creatures perish
in the darkenedblind of quest,
knowing intimations.
Guessing and dreaming
they pursue the real,
faces turned toward the sky
whispering secrets to the heavens.
While the lord remains among them
in every turn of time abiding in their every condition
every instant.
Never without him, they,
not for the blink of an eye --
if only they knew!
nor he for a moment without them.

I am the One whom I love

I am the One whom I love, and the One whom I love is myself.
We are two souls incarnated in one body;
if you see me, you see Him,
if you see Him, you see us.
