Shiva Panchanana Stotram

Shiva Panchanana stotram  - Prayer to Lord Shiva with five faces. These faces - Sadyojāta,Vāmadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha and Īshāna - have plural symbolism and also represent the four directions. (More about this - here). The fifth face which points skywards is the universal face symbolic of purity and spiritual progress. In this prayer they are identified with 4 Vedas and Om.

Praleyachala mindu kunda davalam goksheera phena prabham,
Bhasmabhyanga mananga deha dahana jwaala valee lochanam,
Vishnu brahmarul ganarchitha padanjargwedha nadhodhayam,
Vandeham sakalam kalanga rahitham Sthanormukham paschimam.
I salute the western face of the ever stable God,
Who is everything and without any trace of stain,
Who is as white as snow mountain, moon and the jasmine,
Who is as shining as the foam of the boiling milk,
Who has a body applied with white sacred ash,
Who has eyes which burnt the body of god of love,
And whose reverberations give rise to Rig Veda.
Gouram kumkuma pangilam suthilakam vyapandu ganda sthalam,
Broovikshepa kadaksha veekshshana
lasad samsaktha karnodhphalam,
Snighdham bimbaphaladharam prahasitham
neelala kalamkrutham,
Vande yajusha veda gosha janakam vakthram harsyotharam. 
I salute the northern face of Lord Shiva,
Which gives rise to the sound of Yajur Veda,
Who is white and has a thilaka of Kumkum,
Who shines with an extremely white neck,
Who shines with shifting side long glances,
Who is affectionate and has lips as red as a cherry,
And who is pretty with his blue hair locks and his smile.
Samvarthagni thadith prathaptha kanaka
praspardhi thejo mayam,
Gambeera dhwani sama veda janakam
thamradharam sundaram,
Ardhendu dhyuthi phaala pingala jata bhara prabhadhoragam,
Vande sidha surasurendra namitham poorvam mukham soolina.
I salute the eastern face of the holder of the trident,
Who is worshipped Sidhas, devas, asuras and their kings,
Who has more shine than the Gold purified again and again,
Who is the source of Sama Veda recited in regal tone,
Who has red pretty lips of the colour of copper,
And who has decorated his matted locks,
With the crescent of the moon and a serpent.
Kalabhra bramaranjana dhyuthi nibham
vyavartha pingekshanam,
Karnodhbasitha bhoghi masthaka
maniprothphulla damshtrakuram,
Sarpa prothaka pala shukthisaka lavyakeernasachhekaram,
Vande dakshina meswarasya vadanachaadharva vedhodhayam. 
I salute the southern face of the God of all,
Which gives rise to the Atharva Veda,
Who has the shine of black cloud, bee and Collyrium,
Who has brown eyes which rotate,
Who has teeth which are clearly seen in the shine in the light,
Of the Gem in the heads of the snakes which reside in his ears,
And who has the shine of the crescent in the head decorated by the snake.
Vyaktha vyaktha niroopitham cha paramam
shad thrimsa thathwadhikam,
Thasmad uthara thatwa maksharamithi dheyyam sada yogibhi,
Omkaaradhi samastha manthra janakam
sookshmadhi sookshmam param,
Vande panchamamneeswarasya vadanam
Kham vyapi thejo mayam.
I salute that fifth face facing the sky of Iswara ,
Which is divine and greater than greatest,
Which is greater than the thirty six principles,
That cannot be classified as clear or unclear,
Which is meditated upon by great sages,
As the greatest and deathless principle,
Which is the origin of mantras like Om,
And which is smaller than the smallest.
Yethani pancha vadananbi Maheswarasya,
Ye keerthayanthi purusha sathatham pradoshe,
Gachanthi they Shiva purim ruchirair vimanai,
Kredanthi nandana vane saha loka palai.
Than man who reads this great prayer,
Addressed to the five faces of the great God,
Without fail on the Pradosha days,
Would travel in a pretty airplane to the town of Shiva,
And would spend his time playing with Gods.

Shiva Sutras

Shiva Sutras are a collection of seventy-seven aphorisms attributed to the Kashmir sage Vasugupta. It is said that Vasugupta received these verses in a dream by Shiva who told him to go up to the top of a nearby mountain, and find a rock inscribed with the verses, and entrusting him with the task of spreading the non-dualism.

śivasūtra prathama unmeṣa

1-1 caitanyamātmā
Consciousness is the being.
1-2 jñānaṃ bandhaḥ
Knowledge is bondage.
1-3 yonivargaḥ kalāśarīram
The yoni divisions are the body of time.
1-4 jñānādhiṣṭhānaṃ mātṛkā
The matrikas are the seat of knowledge.
1-5 udyamo bhairavaḥ
Endeavour is Bhairava.
1-6 śakticakrasaṃdhāne viśvasaṃhāraḥ
In the union of the centers of the Shaktis is the dissolution of the universe.
1-7 jāgratsvapnasusuptabhede turyābhogasaṃbhavaḥ
The fourth state (transcending consciousness) can be experienced and is contained in the states of waking, dreaming and deep sleeping.
1-8 jñānaṃ jāgrat
Knowledge is the waking state.
1-9 svapno vikalpāḥ
False imagining is the dream state.
1-10 avivekā māyāsausuptam
Want of awareness is Maya, deep sleep.
1-11 tritayabhoktā vīreśaḥ
The one who can experience the three states is the Lord of the senses.
1-12 vismayo yogabhūmikāḥ
Wonderment is the place of yoga.
1-13 icchā śaktirumā kumārī
Iccha Shakti (Will power) is Uma, the Virgin.
1-14 dṛśyaṃ śarīram
All things the body.
1-15 hṛdaye cittasaṃghaṭṭāddṛśyasvāpadarśanam
When the mind is concentrate in the heart, dream vision disappears.
1-16 śuddhatattvasaṃdhanādvā ̕paśuśaktiḥ
From being aware of the pure essence comes the shakti of non-duality.
1-17 vitarka ātmajñānam
Right discernment is knowledge of the self.
1-18 lokānandaḥ samādhisukham
World bliss is the joy of samadhi.
1-19 śaktisaṃdhāne śarīrotpattiḥ
In the abode of Shakti is creation of the body.
1-20 bhūtasaṃdhānabhūtapṛthaktvaviśvasaṃghaṭṭāḥ
Elements unite, elements separate, and the entire universe is understudied.
1-21 śuddhavidyodayāccakreśatvasiddhiḥ
From pure knowledge come the many Shaktis of the Lord of the wheel of energies.
1-22 mahāhradānusaṃdhānān mantravīryānubhavaḥ
By concentrating on the transcendent lake of female energy, the power of mantra is obtained.

śivasūtra dvitīya unmeṣa

2-1 cittaṃ mantraḥ
The mind becomes mantra.
2-2 prayatnaḥ sādhakaḥ 
Effort is the method.
2-3 vidyāśarīrasattā mantrarahasyam 
The secret of mantra is the being of the body of knowledge.
2-4 garbhe cittavikāso ̕viśiṣṭavidyāsvapnaḥ 
In the womb state of consciousness expansion is the inferior knowledge of the dream state.
2-5 vidyāsamutthāne svābhāvike khecarī śivāvasthā
In the arising spontaneous of Vidya (the knowledge) one may move in the void, like Shiva.
2-6 gururupāyaḥ 
By means of the guru.
2-7 mātṛkācakrasaṃbodhaḥ 
Awakened knowledge is the circle of the letters of the alphabet (Matrika).
2-8 śarīraṃ haviḥ 
The body is the sacrifical ladle.
2-9 jñānamannam
Knowledge is the food.
2-10 vidyāsaṃhāre tadutthasvapnadarśanam 
With the extinction of knowledge emerges the vision of the dream state.
śivasūtra
tṛtīya unmeṣa
3-1 ātmā cittam 
The being is consciousness.
3-2 jñānaṃ bandhaḥ
Knowledge is the fetters.
3-3 kalādīnāṃ tattvānāmaviveko māyā
From the Kalas (principles of transformation), the thing called non-discrimination, Maya.
3-4 śarīre saṃhāraḥ kalānām
In the body is the dissolution of the Kalas.
3-5 nāḍīsaṃhārabhūtajayabhūtakaivalyabhūtapṛthaktvāni 
The nadi (the vital channels) dissolution is the victory over the elements, freedom from the elements, and separation of the elements.
3-6 mohāvaraṇātsiddhiḥ 
Attaining perfection from the veil of delusion.
3-7 mohajayādanantābhogāt sahajavidyājayaḥ
The victory over delusion is the victory of spontaneous knowledge, which is of endless extent.
3-8 jāgrad dvitīyakaraḥ
Waking state is the second ray of consciousness.
3-9 nartaka ātmā 
The Self is the dancer.
3-10 raṅgo ̕ntarātmā 
The inner Self is the theatre stage.
3-11 prekṣakāṇīndriyāṇi
The sense organs are the audience.
3-12 dhīvaśāt sattvasiddhiḥ 
The pure state is achieved by the power of the intellect.
3-13 siddhaḥ svatantrabhāvaḥ
Accomplishment means transformation into independence.
3-14 yathā tatra tathānyatra 
As there, so elsewhere.
3-15 bījāvadhānam
Attention is the Bija (seed).
3-16 āsanasthaḥ sukhaṃ hrade nimajjati
Asana is the happiness of immersion in Shakti.
3-17 svamātrānirmāṇam āpādayati
One's own measure is the measure suitable for measuring, giving guidance.
3-18 vidyā ̕vināśe janmavināśaḥ
Imperishable knowledge means destruction of births.
3-19 kavargādiṣu māheśvaryādyāḥ paśumātaraḥ
In the Ka-series of letters reside Maheshvari and so forth, the mothers of beasts.
3-20 triṣu caturthaṃ tailavad āsecyam 
Pour the fourth (state of consciousness - Turiya) in the three like sesame oil diffusing in water.
3-21 magnaḥ svacittena praviśet 
One should enter, completely immersed, by one's own consciousness.
3-22 prāṇasamācāre samadarśanam
Equally the practice of breath produces a similar sight.
3-23 madhye 'varaprasavaḥ
In the center, emanating the lower.
3-24 mātrāsvapratyayasaṃdhāne naṣṭasya punarutthānam
What was destroyed rises again by the joining of perceptions with the objects of experience.
3-25 śivatulyo jāyate 
One knows equality with Shiva.
3-26 śarīravṛttirvratam 
The existence of the body becomes a religious vow.
3-27 kathā japaḥ
Conversation is mantra recitation.
3-28 dānam ātmajñānam
The act of offering is Self-knowledge.
3-29 yo ̕vipastho jñāhetuś ca
Whosoever is in this state is the means of knowledge.
3-30 svaśaktipracayo viśvam
The universe becomes an aggregate of his powers.
3-31 sthitilayau
Both maintenance and dissolution.
3-32 tatpravṛttāvapyanirāsaḥ saṃvettṛbhāvāt
Though subject to the cyclic law (maintenance and dissolution), one is not excluded from self-experience
3-33 sukhāsukhayorbahirmananam 
Happiness and sadness become external.
3-34 tadvimuktastu kevalī
Set free from that, one is complete.
3-35 mohapratisaṃhatastu karmātmā
The being of action is a heap of delusion.
3-36 bhedatiraskāre sargāntarakarmatvam
When separateness is gone, action can lead to creation.
3-37 karaṇaśaktiḥ svato ̕nubhavāt
The power to create is based on one's own experience.
3-38 tripadādyanuprāṇanam
One should vitalize the three states with Turiya.
3-39 cittasthitivaccharīrakaraṇabāhyeṣu
As in the case of the states of the mind, so also in the case of the body, organs of sense, and external things, there should be vitalization with the bliss of the transcendental consciousness.
3-40 abhilāṣād bahirgatiḥ saṃvāhyasya
Because of desire for external objects the bound soul undergoes birth and rebirth.
3-41 tadārūḍhapramitestatkṣayājjīvasaṃkṣayaḥ
When established in pure awareness (Turiya), the desire is destroyed and the state of empirical individual (Jiva) ceases to exist.
3-42 bhūtakañcukī tadā vimukto bhūyaḥ patisamaḥ paraḥ
Then ending of desire, he uses the body of gross elements as covering, but he is liberated and perfect like Shiva.
3-43 naisargikaḥ prāṇasaṃbandhaḥ
Connection with vital breath is natural.
3-44 nāsikāntarmadhyasaṃyamātkimatra savyāpasavyasauṣumneṣu
Concentrating on the center within the nose, what use are the left and the right channels (Ida, Pingala) or Susumna?
3-45 bhūyaḥ syātpratimīlanam
The yogi experiences both internal and external awareness of the Divine.

Sing and praise that Lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
Who has the tufted hair made by waves of river Ganga,
Who for ever has Gowri as ornament on his left side,
Who is the friend of Lord Narayana ,
And who destroyed the pride of the God of love.
vAchAmagochara manegaguNasvarUpaM
vAgIshaviShNu surasevita pAdapITham |
vAmena vigrahavareNa kalatravantaM
vArANasIpurapatiM bhaja vishvanATham ||

Sing and praise that Lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
Who is beyond the meaning of words,
Who is the store house of several good qualities,
Who has the lotus feet,
Which is worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu and other Devas,
And who keeps his better half on his left side.
bhUtAdhipaM bhujaga bhUShaNa bhUShitA.ngaM
vyAghrAjinAMbaradharaM jaTilaM trinetram |
pAshA.nkushAbhaya varaprada shUlapANiM

Who is the lord of all beings,
Who is having a body decorated by snakes,
Who clothes himself with the skin of a tiger,
Who is having matted hair,
Who is having three eyes,
And who holds trident, rope and goad ,
And is the giver of boons.

bhAlexaNAnala vishoShita pa.nchabANam |
nAgAdhipArachita bhAsurakarNapUraM

Sing and praise that lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
Who shines with the crown decorated by moon,
Who burnt the god of love by the fire of his eyes,
And who wears king of snakes as an ear ring.
pa.nchAnanaM durita matta mada.ngajAnAM
nAgAntakaM danujapu.ngava pannagAnAm |
dAvAnalaM maraNashoka jarATavInAM
vArANasIpurapatiM bhaja vishvanAtham ||

Sing and praise that lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
Who is like a lion to the pride called elephant,
Who is like Garuda the king of birds to the snake like asuras,
And who is like the forest fire that swallows sorrow, death and old age.
tejomayaM saguNa nirguNa madvitIyaM
Anandakanda maparAjita maprameyam |
nAgAtmakaM sakalaniShkala mAtmarUpaM
vArANasIpurapatiM bhaja vishvanAtham ||

Sing and praise that lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
Who has a glittering mien ,
Who is the first among those with and without shape,
Who is the reason for happiness in this world,
Who is never defeated,
Who is beyond the subject of reasoning,
Who is the soul of all serpents,
And who has a soul which is both pure and mixed.
rAgAdidoSha rahitaM svajanAnurAgaM
vairAgya shAnti nilayaM girijA sahAyam |
mAdhurya dhairya subhagaM garalAbhirAmaM
vArANasIpurapatim bhaja vishvanAtham ||

Sing and praise that lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
And sing of him who is in the middle of your lotus like heart,
When it is bereft of all desires and nature of finding fault,
When it is not attached to the sinful acts,
And when it is parked in the deep meditation of Samadhi.
AshAM vihAya parihR^itya parasya nindAM
pApe ratiM cha sunivArya manaH samAdhau |
AdhAya hR^itkamala madhyagataM pareshaM
vArANasIpurapatiM bhaja vishvanAtham ||

Sing and praise that lord of the Universe,
Who is the Lord of the town of Benares,
Who does not have faults like passion,
Who loves good people,
Who is the home of detachment and peace,
Who is helped by the daughter of the mountain,
Who has a pleasing form, full of sweetness and courage,
And wears the strongest poison.
vArANasI purapateH stavanaM shivasya
vyAkhyAta maShTakamidaM paThate manuShyaH |
vidyAM shriyaM vipulasaukhyamanantakIrtiM
samprApya deha vilaye labhate cha moxam ||

That man who reads this octet with its meaning,
Which sings the praise of Shiva who is the Lord of Varanasi,
Would get knowledge, wealth, great pleasure and great fame,
And in the end also attain salvation.

Fool's Friend

Fool's friend was I, none such may know
The way of freedom; yet to me
He shewed the path of love, that so
Fruit of past deeds might ended be.
Cleansing my mind so foul, He made me like a god.
Ah who could win that which the Father hath bestowed?

Thinking it right, sin's path I trod;
But, so that I such paths might leave,
And find His grace, the dancing God,
Who far beyond our thought doth live,
O wonder passing great!
To me His dancing shewed.
Ah who could win that which the Father hath bestowed?

"His form is smeared with ashes white;
The snake His strange adornment is;
The secret scriptures utters He:
What kind of god, my friend, is this?
"Why talk of ash-smear, holy speech,
adornment strange? This only know,
This god, of every living thing is the true nature. Chāḷalō."

"My father and my master, He of all men Lord supreme, is clad
With but a hanging loin-cloth stitched;
Pray tell me, friend, is He not mad?
"The Vedas four with meaning fraught,
The everlasting shastras, know
That these are but the threads whereof is wove His loin-cloth. Chāḷalō."

The burning-ground's His temple fine;
The tiger's skin His raiment is;
Father or mother hath He none;
He's all alone; my friend, see this.''
"Though He no parents hath, no kin,
Yet should His anger kindle, lo,

Mawqif of Glory

Mawqif al Kibriya' - Mawqif of Glory from "The Mawaqif and Mukhatabat" of Al Niffari (Muhammad Ibn Abdi L-Jabbar Al-Niffari).

He stayed me in Glory, and said to me:

1. None has possession of it save Me,
and it is proper to none save Me.
I am the Glorious, Whose neighbourhood is insupportable and Whose continuance is not sought I manifested the Manifest, and am more manifest than it; its nearness does not attain to Me, and its existence is not guided unto Me: and I concealed the Inwardly, and am more concealed than it;
no indication of it applies to Me, and no path of it leads aright unto Me.

2. I am nearer to each thing than its gnosis of itself:
but its gnosis of itself does not pass beyond itself to Me,
and it does not know Me,
so long as its self is the object of its gnosis.

3. But for me, the eyes would not have seen the visible things
proper to them and the ears would not have heard the audible things proper to them.

4. If I had uttered the Word of Glory,
it would have swept away the perceptions as if with scythes,
and obliterated the gnosis like the sand, on the day when the wind sweeps over it.

5. If the Voice of Glory had spoken,
the voices of eve y qualification would have been silent,
and the attainments of every attribute would have returned to nothingness.

6. Where is he that makes My gnoses a means of coming to Me?
If I had shown him the tongue of sovereignty,
his gnosis would have been changed to agnosia,
and he would have been shaken
as the heavens are shaken on the day of their shaking.

7. If I do not cause thee to witness my Glory
in that which I cause thee to witness, then I have set thee in abasement in it.

8. The party of the people of heaven and earth are in the abasement of circumscription. But I have servants, whom heaven cannot contain with all its tiers, and whose hearts the sides of earth cannot support. I have caused the eyes of their hearts to witness my Glory's lights, which fall not on anything but they destroy it. Their hearts behold nothing in the heavens, that they should affirm it, and they have no place of return in the earth, that they should dwell in it.

9. Take that which thou needest to concentrate thee upon Me,
or I will restore thee unto thy need and separate thee from Me.

10 When My gnosis is present, there is no need:
while My gnosis is coming, take what thou needest.

11. My self-revelation which I have shown forth cannot support
My self-revelation which I have not shown forth.

12. I am not self-revelation, and I am not like knowledge:
I am not like self-revelation, and I am not like knowledge.

Sri Bhairava Stava

 vyāptacarācarabhāvaviśeṣaṃ
cinmayamekamanantamanādim |
bhairavanāthamanāthaśaraṇyaṃ
tvanmayacittatayā hṛdi vande || 1 ||
To Him who pervades the consciousness of all moving and non-moving beings, which is divine, only one, endless and primeval, which is Lord Bhairava, who is the refuge for the helpless, to Him who is in my mind with all my heart I offer my salutations.
tvanmayametadaśeṣamidānīṃ
bhāti mama tvadanugrahaśaktyā |
tvaṃ ca maheśa sadaiva mamātmā
svātmamayaṃ mama tena samastam || 2 ||
Oh Mahesh! With the grace of thy blessing this whole universe is nothing more than your manifestation. Wherever I see You and my soul is completely full of You.
svātmani viśvaga(ye)te tvayi nāthe
tena na saṃsṛtibhītikathāsti |
satsvapi durdharaduḥkhavimoha-
trāsavidhāyiṣu karmagaṇeṣu || 3 ||
In this world You are the Lord of my soul, because of this in my life there is no fear of difficulties and pain, which are the result of this cycle of birth and death.
antaka māṃ prati mā dṛśamenāṃ
krodhakarālatamāṃ vinidhehi |
śaṅkarasevanacintanadhīro
bhīṣaṇa bhairava śaktimayo.asmi || 4 ||
Oh Antaka, Lord of Death! Do not cast your awful look on me. Oh Brave who always thinks of serving the Lord Shankara. Oh mighty Bhairava, Lord of creation, sustenance and destruction, give me the strength.
itthamupoḍhabhavanmayasaṃvi-
ddīdhitidāritabhūritamisraḥ |
mṛtyuyamāntakakarmapiśācai-
rnātha namo.astu na jātu bibhemi || 5 ||
Oh Lord of the worlds! Salutations to You. I melt in the rays coming from the splendor of Your Light, which dissipate the darkness of ignorance and the fear of ghosts of the Lord of Death.
proditasatyavibodhamarīci-
prekṣitaviśvapadārthasatattvaḥ |
bhāvaparāmṛtanirbharapūrṇe
tvayyahamātmani nirvṛtimemi || 6 ||
Oh ray of light of eternal truth, universal consciousness of the world, who has a nature full of Divine nectar. My soul filled with ecstasy salutes You.
mānasagocarameti yadaiva
kleśadaśā.atanutāpavidhātrī |
nātha tadaiva mama tvadabheda-
stotraparāmṛtavṛṣṭirudeti || 7 ||
Oh Lord you're attainable by the mind through meditation, You are a shower of nectar of unity that restores my body in a State of suffering.
śaṅkara satyamidaṃ vratadāna-
snānatapo bhavatāpavidāri |
tāvakaśāstraparāmṛtacintā
syandati cetasi nirvṛtidhārām || 8 ||
Oh Shankara, it is true that penance, charity, bathing in sacred water and meditation break the pain cycle of birth and death, but the rain of nectar that flows from your divine story leads to salvation.
nṛtyati gāyati hṛṣyati gāḍhaṃ
saṃvidiyaṃ mama bhairavanātha |
tvāṃ priyamāpya sudarśanamekaṃ
durlabhamanyajanaiḥ samayajnam || 9 ||
Oh Lord Bhairava! It is well known that You are easily accessible by devotees, but inaccessible to people with no devotion. My conscience, having realized your true nature, sings and dances in Ecstasy.
vasurasapauṣe kṛṣṇadaśamyāṃ
abhinavaguptaḥ stavamimamakarot |
yena vibhurbhavamarusantāpaṃ
śamayati jhaṭiti janasya dayāluḥ || 10 ||
Abhinavagupta wrote this great prayer on the tenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Pausha, and with this hymn the Lord Bhairava, all pervading and full of compassion, destroys all the miseries of his devotees.

Thus ends the hymn of nine stanzas written by Abhinavagupta.

Whom Should I Worship?

From the Chapter 7, "On the Nature of God", of Tripura Rahasya.

Parasurama, hearing this speech of his wife, Hemachuda, was delighted and continued to ask her:

70. "Tell me, dear, who is this God, the Creator, the Self-contained One and the Ordainer of the universe to whom I should consecrate myself.

71-72. "Some say He is Vishnu, others Shiva, Ganesha, the Sun, Narasimha or similar other avatars; others say Buddha or Arhat; still others Vasudeva, the life-principle, the Moon, Fire, Karma, Nature, primordial nature and what not.

73. "Each sect give a different origin for the universe. Tell me which of them is true. ...

75. Thus requested, Hemalekha spoke with pleasure: "Lord, I shall tell you the final Truth about God. Listen!

76-78. "God is the All-Seer who generates, permeates, sustains and destroys the universe. He is Siva, He is Vishnu, He is Brahman, the Sun, the Moon, etc. He is the One whom the different sects call their own; He is not Siva, nor Vishnu, nor Brahma nor any other exclusively.

79-93. "I will tell you father. Heed me! To say, for instance that the Primal Being is Siva with five faces and three eyes. The Creator would in that case be like an ordinary potter making pots, endowed with a body and brain. True, there is no art found in the world, without a body and some intellect. In fact, the creative faculty in men belongs to something between, the body and pure intelligence.

"Therefore the mind operates apart from the gross body, in dreams; being intelligent it creates environment suitable to its latent desires. This clearly indicates that the body is only a tool for a purpose and the agent is intelligence. Instruments are necessary for human agents because their capacities are limited and they are not self-contained. Whereas the Creator of the universe is perfect in Himself and creates the whole universe without any external aid. This leads to the important conclusion that God has no body. Otherwise, He would be reduced to a glorified human being, requiring innumerable accessories for work and influenced by seasons and environments, in no way different from a creature, and not the Lord. Moreover, pre-existence of accessories would quash His unique mastery and imply limits to His powers of creation. This is absurd, as being contrary to the original premises. Therefore, He has no body nor the other aids, yet He still creates the world, O Lord of my life! Fools are taken in by the notion of giving a body to the transcendental Being. Still, if devotees worship and contemplate Him with a body according to their own inclinations, He shows them Grace, assuming such a body. For He is unique and fulfils the desires of His devotees.

"Nevertheless, the conclusion must be reached that He is pure intelligence and His consciousness is absolute and transcendental. Such is the consciousness-intelligence in purity, Absolute Being, the One Queen, Parameshwari (Transcendental Goddess) overwhelming the three states and hence called Tripura. Though She is undivided whole the universe manifests in all its variety in Her, being reflected as it were, in a self-luminous mirror. The reflection cannot be apart from the mirror and is therefore one with it. Such being the case, there cannot be difference in degrees (e.g., Shiva, or Vishnu being superior to each other). Bodies are mere conceptions in the lower order of beings and they are not to the point in the case of God. Therefore, be wise, and worship the one pure, unblemished Transcendence.

94. "If unable to comprehend this pure state, one should worship God in the concrete form which is most agreeable to him; in this way, too, one is sure to reach the goal, though gradually.

95. "Though one attempted it in millions of births, one would not advance except in one of these two ways."

The Way of Heaven

 From Thien Tâo, or The Way of Heaven, by Chuang Tzu.

1. The Way of Heaven operates (unceasingly), and leaves no accumulation (of its influence) in any particular place, so that all things are brought to perfection by it; so does the Way of the Tîs operate, and all under the sky turn to them (as their directors); so also does the Way of the Sages operate, and all within the seas submit to them. Those who clearly understand (the Way of) Heaven, who are in sympathy with (that of) the sages, and familiar through the universe and in the four quarters (of the earth) with the work of the Tîs and the kings, yet act spontaneously from themselves:-- with the appearance of being ignorant they are yet entirely still.
The stillness of the sages does not belong to them as a consequence of their skilful ability; all things are not able to disturb their minds;-- it is on this account that they are still. When water is still, its clearness shows the beard and eyebrows (of him who looks into it). It is a perfect Level, and the greatest artificer takes his rule from it. Such is the clearness of still water, and how much greater is that of the human Spirit! The still mind of the sage is the mirror of heaven and earth, the glass of all things.

9. ... The Master said, 'The Tâo does not exhaust itself in what is greatest, nor is it ever absent from what is least; and therefore it is to be found complete and diffused in all things. How wide is its universal comprehension! How deep is its unfathomableness! The embodiment of its attributes in benevolence and righteousness is but a small result of its spirit-like (working); but it is only the perfect man who can determine this. The perfect man has (the charge of) the world;-- is not the charge great? and yet it is not sufficient to embarrass him. He wields the handle of power over the whole world, and yet it is nothing to him. His discrimination detects everything false, and no consideration of gain moves him. He penetrates to the truth of things, and can guard that which is fundamental. So it is that heaven and earth are external to him, and he views all things with indifference, and his spirit is never straitened by them. He has comprehended the Tâo, and is in harmony with its characteristics; he pushes back benevolence and righteousness (into their proper place), and deals with ceremonies and music as (simply) guests: - yes, the mind of the perfect man determines all things aright.

10. ... Thus it is that what we look at and can see is (only) the outward form and colour, and what we listen to and can hear is (only) names and sounds. Alas! that men of the world should think that form and colour, name and sound, should be sufficient to give them the real nature of the Tâ. The form and colour, the name and sound, are certainly not sufficient to convey its real nature; and so it is that 'the wise do not speak and those who do speak are not wise.' How should the world know that real nature?

Yet Not My Will


The events at Gethsemane occurred on the night before the crucifixion of Jesus when He was betrayed. Jesus was under severe pressure in the Garden of Gethsemane, while he struggled in prayer - releasing his burden to the God's will: "if possible, let this cup pass... yet not my will, but Thine be done." From Matthew 26:36-44.

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watched with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 

In the beginning of the prayer, Jesus falls face to the ground. This posture - the prostration - is an act of submissiveness and worship. It is common to major world religions - Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism... It is a gesture that is repeated by any religious institutions in order to express in prayer, and also in a bodily way, the complete entrustment of oneself to God, and reliance on Him. It is the prayer posture that expresses obedience to higher will - a total, trusting abandonment to Him. In our prayer, we too must be capable of bringing before God our struggles, the suffering of certain situations, of certain days, the daily undertaking of following him, and also the weight of evil that we see within ourselves and around us, so that He may give us hope, that He may make us feel His closeness and give us a little light on the path of our life.

Songs of the Yogin

Milarepa was one of the most famous Buddhist yogis to come out of Tibet. Its life is an inspiring story of one who took the difficult and long path, sought to redeem himself. He sang many of his teachings in songs and is depicted with his hand to his ear waiting to hear yours. Here are some of these songs-teachings.

If from parsimony one cannot free oneself,
What is the use of discussing charity?
If one does not forswear hypocrisy and pretence,
What is the use of keeping discipline? 
If one abjures not malicious revilings,
What is the use of exercising
pretentious "patience"?
If one abandons not indifference and inertness,
What is the use of swearing to be Moral? 
If one conquers not the errant thoughts within,
What is the use of toiling in meditation? 
If one does not see all forms as helpful,
What is the use of practising the Wisdom 
If one knows not the profound teaching
Of forbidding and allowing,
What is the use of learning?
If one knows not the art of taking and rejecting,
What is the use of speaking on Karma-causation?
If one's mind does not accord with the Dharma,
What is the use of joining the Order?
If the poisonous snake of Klesa is not killed,
The yearning for wisdom only leads to fallacy.
If venomous jealousy is not overcome,
One's yearning for the Bodhi-mind will be an illusion.
If one refrains not from hurting people,
One's longing for respect and honour
Is merely wishful thinking.
If one cannot conquer ego-clinging and prejudice,
One's craving for the Equality of Dharma
Only brings wrong views.
If one cannot subdue the demon, clinging-ego,
One's Klesas will be great and his Yoga bound to fail.
If one’s actions conform not with the Dharma.
One will always hinder the good deeds of others.
If one has not yet absorbed one's mind in Dharma,
One's babbling and prattling will only disturb others' minds.
Therefore, do not waste your life in words and chatter
But try to gain the assurance of no-regret
And the confidence of facing death!

Realizing not the Truth of many-in-one,
If you are meditating in the great light,
You have only kept the cling-view on.
Realizing not the unity of void and bliss,
Even though you may meditate on void,
You could only practice like the nihilist.
If you can't keep meditation
At anywhere and in any time
You are still in delusion.
If you realize not the plain-mind,
Your practice is not of non-duality,
And non-effort you will not find.
Knowing not that self mind has no existence,
Even if you practice non-discernment,
Your effort is still not in transcendence.
If your renunciation could not be found,
Your actionless-state of meditation
By the worldly hopes & fears is still bound.
Knowing not how to refuse & hold,
All doing surely will enmesh
In the toils & molts of the world.

If there be obstacles, it is not space,
If there be numbers, it is not stars,
If there is a deep mountain
Without shake it should maintain
If there is the great ocean,
No different drops should be mentioned.
If one needs a bridge to pass,
Not a true swimmer he is,
If it is a rainbow,
To grasp it, who and how?

Sri Hanuman is victorious in all directions, in all three worlds. He became very furious and set Lanka on fire. He knows Uma amala Mantra. Son of Wayu and Anjani, He looks like a very big and giant cloud having water in it. He made God Rama and Laxman happy and has helped Sugriva. He was throwing hills, mountains on the enemy army. He is very serious  Brahmachary. He can destroy demons, bad effects of the Grahas, all type of diseases causing by high body temperature. He makes us free from all sorts of troubles.

Shat Sampat

 Six Virtues or Shat Sampat  are areas of mental training as part of "sadhana chatushtaya". It is the practice on the path of Self-Realization of the school of Vedanta or Jnana Yoga.

1) Kshama - Tranquility, i.e. the control  and peace of the mind.
It is difficult to confront a mind because minds are intelligent, and they react. But reaction is not the way in which we have to conduct yourself towards an action. Thus, this practice is a foundation on which the other practices can rest.

2)  Dhama - Training, i.e. the control of the senses. We are not merely an intellect, but also an emotion. When we lack dhama, our senses will do what they want. If they are kept under control, even though we depend heavily upon our senses in practical life, inwardly you are rooted in serenity.

3)  Uparati - Withdrawal is a form of internal renunciation. The first expression of uparati in our personality is detaching from actions that are intensely selfish. Actually, it is not just a question of detaching from them but renouncing them altogether. If we begin to develop a sense of detachment from actions, we no longer want the fruits of our actions. 

4)  Titiksha - Forbearance is tolerance or endurance in regard to conditions prevailing outside, natural as well as social. As Adi Shankara says: The bearing of all afflictions without caring to redress them, being free at the same time from anxiety or lament on their score is called titiksha or forbearance (Vivekchudamani, 24). Eventually, in each event of our life we can see the inner law that operates behind any given circumstance, and to appreciate it.

5)  Shraddha - Faith. What it is possible to tell here? The faith is a permanent value which we seek in this changing world. And it is not that we have been told that something is; therefore, we believe that something has to be, merely because we have been told so. Because of it, the doubt is nearby. It is a mind's business. But in his effort to analyse, the mind forgets that this peculiar nature called God, which it is trying to understand, is not capable of an analysis along the lines of logic because while we may accept God as a kind of object, and may even call Him the Supreme Object, He is not an object of the mind.

6)  Samadhana - Focus is the state in which the mind is tranquil and undistracted because we are no longer dependent upon objects. It is concentration when the consciousness fixes itself with its attention on that which it wants. Adi Sankara defines it: "Whenever a mind engaged in shravana, manana and nididhasana wanders to any worldly object or desire, and finding it worthless, returns to the performance of the three exercises – such returning is called samadhana."

Yes, the object is really an illusion, but it is really not there. Love.
